Recovery:

Surgeons may refer patients to outpatient hospitals for recovery. Patients are not allowed to sit or lie on their buttocks for two to four weeks, which is also when recovery is most painful. In BBL hotspots such as Miami, patients may stay in postoperative BBL recovery houses, where women recover together with caretakers who offer cooking, wound care, and support. Recovery houses may transport patients after surgery in a minivan filled with an inflatable mattress so that patients can lay on their stomachs, and The New York Times noted that recovery houses typically had a "millennial pink, hyperfeminine aesthetic". They are unlicensed and unregulated, and prices typically range from $80 to $400 per day. As of 2022, Florida's Agency for Health Care Administration had received 65 complaints about conditions in BBL recovery houses.

The British National Health Service reports that BBLs have the highest rate of death of all cosmetic procedures with one death per 4000 procedures. More recent survey data suggests one death per 13,000. Popularity

There were 61,387 buttock augmentations in the US in 2022, according to the board-certified plastic surgeon organization, Aesthetic Society (including both implants and fat grafting). In 2023 the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons reported the Brazilian butt lift as the fastest-growing cosmetic surgery, with a 20% increase in popularity since the previous year. Due to the high rate of death, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons issued a four-year moratorium on BBLs from 2018 to 2022, and then issued increased guidance. Following the moratorium, it recommended that surgeons avoid BBLs and instead carry out superficial gluteal lipofilling, where fat collected from the body is injected below the skin rather than deep into muscles like in BBL procedures. The association also recommended surgeons use an ultrasound during fat injections in order to observe the cannulas.
