SERVICE GAMES: THE RISE AND FALL OF SEGA is a history book chronicling the inception and downfall of the arcade and home video game console sections of video game manufacturer Sega. The book is based off the Eidolons-Inn microsite known as SegaBase that the author, Sam Pettus, created to compile the history of SEGA. The book was compiled by David Munoz and released in July 2012.

Based on fan criticism, Munoz took to Kickstarter to fund a revamped, enhanced and extended update to the book which was released in December 2013.

In February 2014, a second Kickstarter campaign was launched to secure funding for an audio version of the book.

Synopsis

Original Edition

The book contains a history of arcade & home video game console manufacturer SEGA; the book starts with its humble beginnings in the 1950's and concludes with the companies exit from the home console market in 2001 after the failure of Dreamcast. The book aims to paint a human face on a corporation by extensively exploring the lives of the people that created the company such as David Rosen, Hayao Nakayama and Tom Kalinske as well as famous executives such as Bernie Stolar, Peter Moore and Simon Jeffery. In addition to the corporate side of the firm, detailed history is provided on the designers such as Yu Suzuki, Yuji Naka, and Mark Cerny among several others. A detailed list of all the hardware Sega release is included, as well as listed interesting facts about the individual consoles.

Enhanced Edition

Based on the feedback of the original book, a new edition was released in 2013 which added more content, images, and corrected facts. Unlike the original edition, the enhanced version was rewritten as a more cohesive novel, removing many of the redundancies that SegaBase possessed. This version is notable for adding in a dedicated Sega Europe section, something many books at the time lacked. It also featured exclusive interviews with WaterMelon Games, a company that also originated from Eidolons-Inn.
