The Netherlands were made up of 17 provinces, and they were led by William of Orange. Philip's regent in the area was his half-sister, Margeret. In the beginning of 1556, the aristocracy went on strike by resigning their offices. The lower nobility demanded religious freedom, and the ending of the Inquisition. In August 1556, mobs of Calvinists desecrated churches and smashed images in all the key cities of the Netherlands. Philip sent the Duke of Alva with 10,000 troops to the Netherlands in 1567. William of Orange fled, and 1000 people were executed. The English were severely intimidated by the Spanish occupation, as it was important strategically and for trade, and Anglo-Spanish relations were at breaking point by 1568, especially after Sir John hawkins attacked Spanish shipping off the coast of Mexico in September 1568. In the following November, Elizabeth seized two ships carrying the armies' pay. Philip, however, was precoccupied with his son, Don Carlos, who had gone mad, and his wife's death. And then the Moriscos revolted.
