Michael is a member of the Democratic Party. As a student, Michael received several state and national awards for his work on additive manufacturing, engineering technology design, entrepreneurship, and mathematics among other competitions.

Michael grew up in the Howe neighborhood of the Longfellow community of South Minneapolis. He grew up with is grandparents, aunt, and mother in a home that was situated between both campuses of Minnehaha Academy from 1992 until 2005.
