Broadcast and cable television networks have since aired programs that are branded as "limited series" or "event series." Several television executives interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter stated that the two aforementioned terms denote programs similar to the miniseries while others claim that the term "miniseries" has negative connotations to the public, having become associated with the melodramas that were commonly done under this format.{{cite web|url=http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/heroes-24-whats-difference-between-683563|title='Heroes', '24': What's the Difference Between a 'Miniseries,' 'Limited' or 'Event' Series?|author=Lacey Rose and Lesley Goldberg|work=The Hollywood Reporter|accessdate=February 25, 2015}}
The term "limited series" came to be adopted in the 2010s by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences to refer to television series that are preconceived as being one-season shows with no intention of being renewed for additional seasons, or feature rotating casts and storylines each season, such as American Horror Story, Fargo and True Detective. This makes the self-contained season longer than a miniseries, but shorter than the entire run of the multi-season series. This terminology became relevant for the purpose of categorization of programs for industry awards.
Background
In American television, the term "limited series" (also called an "event series") came to be adopted in the 21st century to refer to television series that are preconceived as being fixed-term series, with a few of the earliest examples being Revelations,{{cite web |author=Tom Shales |url=http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A48351-2005Apr12.html |title=NBC's 'Revelations': It's a Long Way To Armageddon |work=The Washington Post |date=April 13, 2005 |access-date=2017-01-10 |quote=NBC isn't calling this a "miniseries" but rather a "six-hour event series," which gives the network the option of bringing it back weekly next fall.}}{{cite web |author=Rick Kissell |url=http://variety.com/2005/scene/markets-festivals/nbc-finds-religion-1117921125/ |title=NBC's 'Revelations': It's a Long Way To Armageddon |work=Variety |date=April 14, 2005 |access-date=2017-01-10 |quote=...but NBC opened its event series “Revelations” to strong numbers Wednesday.}} The Pillars of the Earth,{{cite news |first=Scott|last=Roxborough |url=http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/a-strong-foundation-medieval-pillars-108405 |title=A strong foundation for medieval 'Pillars' |work=The Hollywood Reporter |agency=Associated Press |date=April 2, 2008 |accessdate=December 18, 2015 |quote=Munich-based boutique producer-distributor Tandem Communications has nailed down the rights to Ken Follett's best-seller "The Pillars of the Earth" to produce as a limited series with Ridley and Tony Scott's Scott Free Prods.}} Harper's Island,{{cite journal |first=Brian|last=Lowry |url=http://variety.com/2009/scene/markets-festivals/harper-s-island-1200507344/ |title=Review: ‘Harper’s Island’ |work=Variety |date=April 3, 2009 |accessdate=December 18, 2015 |quote=Kudos to CBS, too, for bending the episodic mold (and its procedural comfort zone) to accommodate a stunt resembling the British TV model — that is, a limited series with a fixed run.}} and V (2009).{{cite journal |first=Cynthia|last=Littleton |url=http://variety.com/2009/tv/features/abc-s-pilot-pickup-spree-1118003771/ |title=ABC’s pilot pickup spree |work=Variety |date=May 15, 2009 |accessdate=December 18, 2015 |quote=...and “V,” which will be presented as a limited “event” series.}} These series have a self-contained season longer than a traditional miniseries, but shorter than the run of a multi-season series.{{citation needed|date=April 2016}} Another variation on this is television series that feature rotating casts and storylines each season, such American Horror Story,{{cite press release |url=http://www.thefutoncritic.com/news/2015/11/10/american-horror-story-returning-for-sixth-installment-on-fx-98304/20151110fx01/ |title="American Horror Story" Returning for Sixth Installment on FX |publisher=FX |date=November 10, 2015 |accessdate=December 18, 2015 |via=The Futon Critic |quote=FX has ordered the sixth installment of the groundbreaking and award-winning anthology limited series American Horror Story, it was announced today by John Landgraf, CEO of FX Networks and FX Productions.}} Fargo,{{cite news |first=Nellie|last=Andreeva |url=http://deadline.com/2013/03/fx-greenlights-fargo-limited-series-463214/ |title=FX Greenlights ‘Fargo’ Limited Series, Lines Up Slew Of Event Series In Development |work=Deadline Hollywood |date=March 28, 2013 |accessdate=April 16, 2016 |quote=FX has given the green light to the first limited series under the cable network’s push in that programming area — an adaptation of Joel and Ethan Coen’s 1996 comedic crime drama Fargo.}}{{cite news |first=Brian|last=Moylan |url=http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2014/jul/22/fargo-true-detective-characters-anthology-series |title=Fargo will return for a second season, but you might not recognise it |work=The Guardian |date=July 22, 2014 |accessdate=April 16, 2016 |quote=Anthology series like Fargo and True Detective rely on ditching characters to keep it fresh. Such terminology came into use for the purpose of ensuring that Primetime Emmy Award categories reflect the changing landscape of television.{{cite journal |last=Schneider|first=Michael |date=March 9, 2015 |title=Inside the Emmys' New Rules |work=TV Guide |pages=8–9}} In 2014, for example, producers of the series Fargo obtained permission to enter that program into the miniseries category, while True Detective was submitted into competition as a drama series.{{cite news |first=Scott|last=Feinberg |url=http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/race/emmys-who-will-benefit-new-801466 |title=Emmys: Who Will Benefit Most From the New "Limited Series" Category? |work=The Hollywood Reporter |date=June 16, 2015 |accessdate=April 16, 2016}} Neither show was entered into the 2015 Emmy race because their second seasons did not air during the eligibility period. By the 2015 Emmy season, however, the miniseries category was renamed as "limited series" (as it has been previously named between 1974–85{{cite magazine |url=http://www.broadcastingcable.com/file/10471-0729_FF_RWD.pdf |title=Emmy’s Longtime Mini Firestorm |magazine=Broadcasting & Cable |first=Andrea |last=Morabito |date=July 29, 2013 |page=58 |format=pdf |accessdate=April 16, 2016}}), which is defined as a program that tells a complete story and does not feature the same main characters in subsequent seasons. Under the new guidelines, both Fargo and True Detective are considered limited series, which separates them from traditional television dramas with more conventionally-structured seasons such as Mad Men or Game of Thrones, thus giving both sets of shows a greater opportunity to win awards.
