This Train

Opening line: "This Train is bound for glory, this train."

-African American religious folk song.

-First record of it in 1925, but it was already popular at the time (ref: Cohen, 630). Existed in oral tradition before that.

-Recorded several times in the 1920s (list groups)

-The song's original opening line provided the title for Woody Guthrie's autobiography, Bound for Glory.

-Like many folk songs, this one has many variations. It held a prominent place in the repertoire of performers in the urban folksong revival of the 1960s, and was used as an anti-segregation song during the American Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. (e.g., Big Bill Broonzy lyrics)

-Bob Marley had a version with a sung introduction—transcribe lyrics from recording—(when I was young my mom sang this song, now I'm a man and it lingers deep in my soul).

-also sung by: Sister Rosetta Tharpe; Louis Armstrong; The Kingston Trio; Peter, Paul and Mary.
