I performed my doctoral dissertation work in neurophysiology under the direction of Dr. Roger M. Enoka in the Department of Integrative Physiology at the University of Colorado Boulder. I began work on my dissertation in January 2007 and defended it on November 23, 2010. I identify as a first-generation college student.

I currently have appointments to 1) the Physical Therapy Program in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation in the School of Medicine and 2) the Physician Assistant Program at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.[https://medschool.cuanschutz.edu/physical-therapy-program/faculty-and-staff List of Physical Therapy Program Faculty] My teaching duties include course coordination of the anatomy curricula of the residential and hybrid PT Program pathways, and the longitudinally integrated PA Program.

I have previously taught anatomy to medical (2011-2024), dental (2011-2014), anesthesiology assistant (2015-2018), and modern human anatomy graduate (2012-2018) students. According to my records, I have taught over 5,400 students between 2011 and 2024 and worked with over 660 whole-body donors during that same period.

My scholarly efforts center around the exploration of innovative methods to teach complex concepts in human anatomy to students of healthcare professions. I focus on active learning strategies that improve student engagement and comprehension. My work applies conceptual frameworks (e.g., cognitive load theory, constructivism) to explore the effects of integration of technology (e.g., wiki usage, enhanced photography, browser usage in anatomy lab, digital dissection guides, & social media) on learning outcomes and learner satisfaction.

In 2025, I became a Senior Fellow member under the Teaching Track of the Academy of Medical Educators in the School of Medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.

I have been a member of the American Association for Anatomy and the American Physical Therapy Association since 2012.

I am also an avid philatelist and showcase my interests in anatomy and philately under the persona "Dissecting Philately". I began collecting at age ten (1992) when I was introduced to the hobby by my mother. After a hiatus, I returned to the hobby in 2017 after inheriting the postal collection of my wife's great-grandmother Edith Alice Macia, whom was the postmaster for Tombstone Arizona from 1928-1936. My collecting focus includes United States postage stamps (1847-1940), Great Britain postage stamps (1840-1940), covers (envelopes) of Colorado and Arizona, custom cover creation, philatelic genealogy, "anato-philately", and youth stamp collecting and engagement.
