Romex is brand name of Non-Metallic (“NM”) electrical wiring used in buildings and construction. History
Romex was first developed in in 1922 by the former Rome Wire Company, a predecessor to General Cable Corporation. In 2001, Southwire purchased the electrical building wire division of General Cable Corporation, including the Romex brand. Type NM cable continues to be sold under the brand name Romex by Southwire. Variations
Southwire sells two types wires under the Romex brand: NM-B and NMD90.
Type NM-B Romex
Type NM-B Romex cable is intended for use in both exposed and concealed work in normally dry locations at temperatures not to exceed 90°C (with ampacity limited to that for 60°C conductors) as specified in the National Electrical Code. NM-B cable may be run in air voids of masonry block or tile walls where such walls are not subject to excessive moisture or dampness. Type NMD90 Romex
Type NMD90 Romex cable can be used for both exposed work in dry locations or concealed work in dry or damp locations. Specifications call for maximum allowable conductor temperature is 90°C.
