Herbert John Buckmaster (21 November 1881 – 14 October 1966), known as Buck,{{sfn|Morley|1979|p=21}} was an English soldier. He was the first husband of actress Gladys Cooper (1888–1971) and the father of actor John R. Buckmaster (1915–1983).

He was educated at Sherborne School, then Eton College. He served in the Boer War{{sfn|Morley|1979|p=20}} and in France during WW I, from early 1915{{sfn|Morley|1979|p=53}} for three-and-a-half years.{{sfn|Morley|1979|p=75}}

He founded Buck's Club,{{sfn|Morley|1979|p=76}} whence the name "Buck's Fizz" originated.{{sfn|Old Shirburnian Society}}

Personal life

His first marriage was to Gladys Cooper (1888–1971), on 12 December 1908 at St George's, Hanover Square.{{sfn|Morley|1979|pp=27–28}} The couple had two children: Joan (1910–2005), who married the actor Robert Morley, and John Rodney (1915–1983). His second marriage was to Nellie Taylor (1894–1932), on 2 October 1923 at the registry office in Henrietta Street, Covent Garden.{{sfn|Buckmaster|1933|pp=240–241}}{{sfn|TopFoto, 2015}}{{sfn|St. Martin at UKBMD}} She died of leukaemia in 1932.{{sfn|Morley|1979|p=133}} On 4 July 1940, he married Grace Lowrey Stanley (1907–1977) in Woking, Surrey; she was the second daughter of Lord Stanley and formerly married in 1928 to Edward James Barford, whom she divorced in 1940.{{sfn|V&A Lafayette, 1989}}
