On March 24, 2009 the fishing vessel Lady Mary sank approximately 65 nautical miles southeast Cape May, New Jersey with the loss of six of its seven crewmen. The vessel was owned by Smith and Smith LLC, a company consisting of Mr. Royal Smith, Mr. Royal Smith Jr. and Mr. Timothy Smith. Due to the significant loss of life the Commandant of the U. S. Coast Guard convened a Marine Board, assisted by the National Transportation Safety Board, to fully investigate all the circumstances surrounding this sinking. A task complicated by the fact that the lone survivor did not understand English and was awake for only fifteen minutes before abandoning the fishing vessel.
