Roger Corder

Roger grew up in southwest [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England England] on a dairy farm on the edge of the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackdown_Hills Blackdown Hills] - an [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Area_of_Outstanding_Natural_Beauty Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty]. He was a pupil at [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wellington_School,_Somerset Wellington School] in Somerset - alma mater of actor [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Suchet David Suchet], chef and TV personality [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_Floyd Keith Floyd], and author [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeffrey_Archer Jeffrey Archer]. After leaving school, Roger read for a BSc in pharmacy at the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Portsmouth School of Pharmacy in Portsmouth]. Following this he took a pre-registration position in North East Thames Regional Heath Authority, which included training in clinical pharmacy at [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Bartholomew%27s_Hospital St. Bartholomew’s Hospital].

After qualifying as a pharmacist in 1978 and registering as a Member of the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Pharmaceutical_Society_of_Great_Britain Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain], the opportunity arose for Roger to take up a career in medical research through positions in [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endocrinology Endocrinology] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemical_pathology Chemical Pathology] at the Medical College of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Bartholomew%27s_Hospital St. Bartholomew’s Hospital]. He obtained an MSc in [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pharmacology Pharmacology] from the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_East_London University of East London] in 1981, and was later awarded a PhD in 1986 from the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_London University of London] for his studies of [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuropeptide_Y Neuropeptide Y].

After seven years doing research at [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barts_and_The_London_School_of_Medicine_and_Dentistry Barts], for which he was awarded his PhD, Roger moved to [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switzerland Switzerland] where he undertook research for five years in the Department of Medicine at the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Geneva University of Geneva]. In 1991, Roger returned to London to work with Nobel Laureate [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Vane Sir John Vane] and assume the position of senior scientist leading endothelin research at the [http://www.whri.qmul.ac.uk William Harvey Research Institute].

He became Professor of Experimental Therapeutics in 2000. Since 2000 he has also been chairman of the management committee of the [http://www.whrf.org.uk/ William Harvey Research Foundation]. Roger is a professional member of the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Heart_Association American Heart Association], and the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Society_for_Pharmacology_and_Experimental_Therapeutics American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics]. In the UK he is a Fellow of the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Society_of_Medicine Royal Society of Medicine], and a member of the [http://www.endocrinology.org/ Society for Endocrinology], and the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Pharmacological_Society British Pharmacological Society].
