Fire in the Middle{{Cite web |title=Fire in the Middle - Facebook |url=https://www.facebook.com/fireinthemiddleuk}} is a Scottish/English/Canadian rock band formed in Berwick-upon-Tweed in early 2020, just weeks before the United Kingdom entered its first COVID-19 lockdown. The group was founded by members of Duns’ Easter Street and Berwick’s The Warehouse Announcement.

History

The band was formed by Canadian schoolteacher and musician Derek Huffman (vocals, guitars, piano), alongside Scott Courtney (guitars), Steven Walker (vocals, bass), and Daniel Dishington (drums). The group emerged during the global COVID-19 pandemic, using the lockdown period to shape their early sound.

Their debut EP, The Sound{{Cite web |title=The Sound - Spotify |url=https://open.spotify.com/album/381d21qpD0UlXBOhsr7JAC}}, was released in December 2023 as the first of a two-part project. The follow-up EP, The Fury{{Cite web |title=The Fury - Spotify |url=https://open.spotify.com/album/2a8S6vehRt1IdWvHt4TOys}}, released in spring 2025. Both EPs were written by Huffman in memory of his daughter, Maggie, who passed away from Spinal Muscular Atrophy in 2017. The songs explore themes of grief, love, hope, and resilience.

The two EPs were combined and released as a full-length 12" album, The Sound and the Fury{{Cite web |title=The Sound and The Fury - vinyl - Bandcamp |url=https://fireinthemiddle.bandcamp.com/album/the-sound-the-fury-limited-12-vinyl}}, in 2025. The vinyl release is being produced in partnership with Seabass Vinyl, Scotland’s first vinyl pressing plant.

Fire in the Middle perform regularly in Northumberland{{Cite web |title=Fire in the Middle at Repas 7 |url=https://www.northumberlandgazette.co.uk/whats-on/arts-and-entertainment/two-berwick-live-music-spots-are-taking-part-in-independent-venue-week-4944644}} and the Scottish Borders, and will feature at Lindisfarne Festival{{Cite web |title=Lindisfarne Festival |url=https://lindisfarnefestival.com/}} in August, 2025, alongside bands like Doves, Hawkwind, and The Waterboys.

Musical style and themes

Fire in the Middle blends melodic and alternative rock influences with emotionally driven lyrics. The band’s sound features layered guitars, dynamic arrangements, and introspective themes. Much of their material reflects on personal loss, particularly Huffman’s experience with bereavement, while ultimately aiming to convey messages of hope and the search for light in dark circumstances.
