Colin J. Cantwell is a model maker and animator best known for his work on Star Wars (1977), for which he prototyped the Death Star and several spacecraft.{{rp|119}}

Personal life

Beginning in 1955, Cantwell attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he studied art and engineering. After recommending that UCLA create an animation department, he was the first to graduate from the university with a degree in animation.

Career

As a model maker at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Cantwell prototyped the Death Star, Star Destroyer, TIE fighter, X-wing fighter, and several other spacecraft used in Star Wars (1977) based on paintings done by concept artist Ralph McQuarrie.
