Hi Averell23, thank you for your message. Yes, I remember that I didn't mind the merge. What happened was that soemone else went on to re-create the same article pasting the original material which I had written. At first I found it strange that someone would undelete the article and then figured that maybe it was done because during the time Maria has become notable within her own right. Then, the big surprise, when I checked the history page, I found out that the person or user had recreated the article and as I said before by pasting my original work and taking the credit as creator. I wasn't about to let this happen, so what I did was delete the copy and redirect the original with the real history page. Anyway, I don't have anthing against the merge, but I think that maybe Maria has become notable on her own merits. Tony the Marine (talk) 00:49, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

I hope this is the proper way to open a dialogue with you... I am a new user and am still coming up to speed on how most things work. In regards to your policing of my inclusions; I am the photographer of the work in question. Now, I can always appreciate accountability and I see a grey area where a link could be included for self promotion. Perhaps I am too close to the issue after all this time. Perhaps I find it hard to separate my self from it as it has taken over my personal and professional life. Disseminating my work on Sudan and speaking on the subject at hundreds of universities since 2003, is indeed how I pay my bills, so I hope you can understand the grey area I refer to, but my financial reward has been small, and leaves much to be desired. I know I will not benefit directly from my contribution to Wikipedia.

Regardless, I do feel that the links I am adding are important additions to our collective knowledge. If I didn't feel this way I would not have snuck into Sudan a half dozen times to document the various aspects of the crisis there with a camera - I would not have devoted the last seven years to Sudan professionally. You do not have to agree that images augment our knowledge of a thing, especially one as obscure to most in the developed world as a genocide, or rebel movement. Perhaps you too have been to Darfur and rode with the Justice and Equality Movement through the desert and decimated villages and therefore do not need to see photographs because you have truly experienced the topics I am trying to illustrate. However there is a good percentage of the population who does require imagery, and I do not think it appropriate for you to suppress it for those individuals. I hope you are willing to see my links as a means to illustrate the topics I have photographed, or possibly as a cultural backdrop for the experience of learning about those subjects, for those who will never go to these paces and do the things I have done - especially for those who learn visually.

Words are critical - I truly believe that, but they are symbols nonetheless for concepts and require of us our own previous experiences and prior knowledge to leverage meaning within our minds. Photographs, like mine, capture the essence of a thing which requires little or no words to leverage meaning for someone who wasn't there or has no relevant experience. Take the title of the article, Justice and Equality Movement, for example. This is a pretty obscure name that an organized group have decided to call themselves to signify what the are fighting for. It suggests things, such as organization, but the name does not suggest that they fight at all. It suggests to me that they are concerned with having a good PR image within the international community. I know a different side of the story. I know what weapons they use, what tea they drink, when they pray and how, which by the way is illustrated in one of my photographs at the link below. I know how they travel, what they eat, how old their youngest rebels are... I know their names. These are all questions I get from the hundreds of audiences I've spoken to and shown this work to. I am sure they are questions wikipedia users have too and none of it is listed in the article

"They" say a picture is worth a thousand words... There are approximately 750 words for the entire Justice and Equality Movement article.

I will not release these photographs into the public domain at this time - possibly never. They are protected under copyright laws which protect the individuals in my pictures just as those laws protect my right and ability to license my images and thereby financially allow for the creation of future images. More importantly, it is my responsibility to see to it that they are used in the proper context. Wikipedia is a great context, but once they are released there, God only knows what people will think to use them for. These people trusted me with their stories during the most vulnerable times. I am doing my best to make sure their initial intentions in allowing me to photograph them are upheld along with, most importantly, their dignity.

I have made my argument for my link containing neutral and accurate material about the subject of the article. I still have not heard your argument. I find it strange that you feel them valuable enough to be released for inclusion in the article itself (to help Wikipedia), but my site separate from Wikipedia "does not provide additional in-depth information." I absolutely reject this statement as fact. This is your opinion and I can safely say it is most definitely not shared by the majority of those who view my work.

You initially wrote me, "Maybe you were just honestly trying to raise awareness for the situation in Darfur. This is a noble thing, but Wikipedia is not the place to do it." You are right about my objectives. I do seek to raise awareness, if not the level of debate too. Perhaps I am not understanding you particular use of the phrase "raise awareness" but I thought this was exactly the intention of wikipedia. I could just as justly ask why you are trying to suppress awareness with regard to topics where my body of work is germane and question the nobility in that? Would you agree?

In rereading your second notice to me, I see that you are referring only to the link for the Justice and Equality Movement article... I apologize if I came on too strong above as your tone seemed a bit sarcastic initially to me when you complemented my useful contributions. The links I added, were in deed, the very same ones I added the first time, just tagged differently and not uploaded all at once. So I thought you were bringing to issue the very same contributions you were genuinely trying to complement.

In regard to the Justice and Equality Movement link, I feel it is appropriate because the movement, at the end of the day, is made up of individuals. In this case they come from the same region of the world, share the same general ideology, dress similarly, and have similar lifestyles which, currently, are benefiting the movement on a whole. Their collective history put them on this road they are currently on. The shared marginalization and desertified environment yielding the struggle for resources which is at the root cause of their movement. My photographs contain much of this information and therefore is, in my opinion, germane to the article in question. You mentioned looking at my photographs. Did you notice the child with the assault rifle? He is a member of the JEM, which is stated in the caption. This is important information about this movement, which is not presently covered in the article and conveys it in a very non-accusatory manner. This collection of pictures should ultimately ask more questions than it answers, but ultimately this serves the impetus for, inquiry, and expanding knowledge. I see this as a benefit to these specific articles.

I am writing in response to the edited I suggested for the medical applications section of the augmented reality page. I would like to contest this discission to remove my edit on the basis that: (1) I have no financial ties pertaining to the peer-reviewed publication, (2) this edit enhances the section of the topic by providing an additional example of the technologies application making it a well rounded article, (3) the edit raises awareness of the feild of anatomic pathology and the critical role pathologists play, especially in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of cancer.

I would like to emphasize I have no financial conflicts pertaining to the edit and I do understand and believe in the importance of an unbiased Wikipedia. Yes, I am an author for the referenced material, but when the topic becomes as specific as the use of augmented reality in surgical pathology gross examination and training, I can count the number of people in this space on one hand. If I didn't write about it then who would?
