User talk:Backyard116

Welcome!

Hello, Backyard116, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions.

I noticed that one of the first articles you edited appears to be dealing with a topic with which you may have a conflict of interest. In other words, you may find it difficult to write about that topic in a neutral and objective way, because you are, work for, or represent, the subject of that article. Your recent contributions may have already been undone for this very reason.

To reduce the chances of your contributions being undone, you might like to draft your revised article before submission, and then ask me or another editor to proofread it. See our help page on userspace drafts for more details. If the page you created has already been deleted from Wikipedia, but you want to save the content from it to use for that draft, don't hesitate to ask anyone from this list and they will copy it to your user page.

One rule we do have in connection with conflicts of interest is that accounts used by more than one person will unfortunately be blocked from editing. Wikipedia generally does not allow editors to have usernames which imply that the account belongs to a company or corporation. If you have a username like this, you should request a change of username or create a new account. (A name that identifies the user as an individual within a given organization may be OK.)

In addition, if you receive, or expect to receive, compensation for any contribution you make, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation to comply with our terms of use and our policy on paid editing.

Here are some pages that you might find helpful:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your messages on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically insert your username and the date. If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Tlc|Help me}} before the question. Again, welcome! {{#ifexpr: ({{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}} - 20230629224509) < 5000000000 | {{PAGENAME}} | }} CNMall41 (talk) 22:45, 29 June 2023 (UTC)

Your submission at [[Wikipedia:Articles for creation|Articles for creation]]: [[Draft:Bill Carmody (lawyer)|Bill Carmody (lawyer)]] (June 29)

File:AFC-Logo_Decline.svgYour recent article submission to Articles for Creation has been reviewed. Unfortunately, it has not been accepted at this time. The reason left by CNMall41 was:

{{divbox|gray|3=This submission appears to read more like an advertisement than an entry in an encyclopedia. Encyclopedia articles need to be written from a neutral point of view, and should refer to a range of independent, reliable, published sources, not just to materials produced by the creator of the subject being discussed. This is important so that the article can meet Wikipedia's verifiability policy and the notability of the subject can be established. If you still feel that this subject is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, please rewrite your submission to comply with these policies.|}} The comment the reviewer left was:

{{divbox|blue|3=It is going to be difficult to create a draft if this is in fact someone you known personally. People tend to write in a more promotional tone for those they know. With that in mind, this draft reads like a resume and is highly promotional. For example, the second sentence mentions clients as if representing this clients gives him notability for Wikipedia. Notability is not WP:INHERENT.}} Please check the submission for any additional comments left by the reviewer. You are encouraged to edit the submission to address the issues raised and resubmit after they have been resolved.

File:AFC-Logo_Decline.svgYour recent article submission to Articles for Creation has been reviewed. Unfortunately, it has not been accepted at this time. The reason left by Timtrent was:

{{divbox|gray|3=A common misconception is that high profile cases are what makes a lawyer notable. There is a consideration that without a good reputation the high profile cases will not arrive, but that is commercial reality, and not what makes a lawyer notable I a Wikipedia sense.

This means that while you may feel that the section you have chosen to title "Notable cases" holds sway here it does not, the more so since you have chosen the word d"Notable" in the title.

A lawyer represents clients. This is WP:ROTM behaviour. We truly have no interest in it. What interests us is whether references show them to be notable.

For a living person we have a high standard of referencing. Every substantive fact you assert, especially one that is susceptible to potential challenge, requires a citation with a reference that is about them, and is independent of them, in multiple secondary sources which are WP:RS, and is significant coverage. Please also see WP:PRIMARY which details the limited permitted usage of primary sources and WP:SELFPUB which has clear limitations on self published sources. Providing sufficient references, ideally one per fact cited, that meet these tough criteria is likely to make this draft a clear acceptance (0.9 probability). Lack of them or an inability to find them is likely to mean that the person is not suitable for inclusion, certainly today.

The key words are "about them".

The foregoing means I am declining your first attempt at submission with the request that you work on understanding and meeting Wikipedia's needs|}} Please check the submission for any additional comments left by the reviewer. Carmody Notability

I believe that notability for William Carmody is well established in the draft. I have very carefully studied Wikipedia policy for notability of people. WP:BIO and WP:GA of similar bios. Note I disclose a COI above.

First, there have been multiple profiles of Carmody in independent, highly reliable media sources. Perhaps these were not considered because of paywalls, so I have posted excerpts below on Talk, making it easier to review.

  • "Lawyer to Ex-WeWork CEO Neumann Wins Big by Betting on Himself" Bloomberg Law [https://news.bloomberglaw.com/business-and-practice/lawyer-to-ex-wework-ceo-neumann-wins-big-by-betting-on-himself]

  • "Match, IAC Tap High-Profile Litigator for $2 Billion Tinder Suit" in Bloomberg Law. in Law360. [https://news.bloomberglaw.com/business-and-practice/match-iac-bring-in-new-trial-lawyer-for-2-billion-tinder-suit]

  • Carmodys breaks from traditional law firm look: [https://www.bizjournals.com/dallas/stories/1999/07/26/focus2.html]

Second, he has also received additional significant coverage in the mainstream independent press, well beyond passing mentions, and these can be combined to demonstrate notability (“multiple independent sources may be combined to demonstrate notability” WP: Notability (people)). Again, I have posted excerpts of content behind paywalls to make it easier to review.

  • Waymo v. Uber Trial Opens With a Battle of Sports Metaphors: [https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/05/technology/uber-waymo-trial.html]
  • Match, IAC Tap High-Profile Litigator for $2 Billion Tinder Suit: [https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-11-09/tinder-worth-10-billion-less-than-rad-claims-iac-lawyer-says#xj4y7vzkg]

His qualification is not based on the cases he has worked on – it’s based on substantial press coverage about him. While I have listed his significant cases, this is for the purpose of structuring the page like that of similar highly-prominent attorneys, such as David Boies, F. Lee Bailey, and Carrie Goldberg as per MOS:SNO. Every single source I used to verify his participation in these cases also specifically includes that he was the attorney on the cases.
