Former American

Hi B. Any good way to go about this? Frank Beamer now has grammar problems. I guess we can revert the whole NFL if this is true, lol. I'm not good going back at someone regarding grammar issues. I do know how to spell grammar though. Thanks in advance. John. Bringingthewood (talk) 22:14, 7 May 2025 (UTC)

:@Bringingthewood: I [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Frank_Beamer&diff=prev&oldid=1289346772 changed to "American former"] and started a discussion on the talk page. —Bagumba (talk) 01:26, 8 May 2025 (UTC)

::Sounds good, thank you. I put it that way on football and baseball pages, but when I run across a professor .. I cut class! We'll see what happens. John. Bringingthewood (talk) 01:35, 8 May 2025 (UTC)

I'll keep my things in one section to save space for you. Is it it at all possible that by adding U.S. to the place of death, just because it happens to be THE SAME PLACE, goes against yet another rule? What I did on the Dodo Marmarosa page was reverted due to a musical artist rule. That's like saying good for the NBA .. not the NHL. Thanks, John. Bringingthewood (talk) 01:04, 12 May 2025 (UTC)

:{{Tps}} I thought I'd seen everything before but never knew about the musical artist thing. I've actually seen it all now. ~WikiOriginal-9~ (talk) 01:22, 12 May 2025 (UTC)

::Hee. I was hoping that Richard Ramirez was around. Though much nicer than The Night Stalker, lol. I'm not mad at Eddie, I was just hoping that the rules were stretched. Like the way I was removing the caption links on purpose last year. Hiccup. Bringingthewood (talk) 01:36, 12 May 2025 (UTC)

:I'm not aware of a community guideline on this, which make it fair game for local conventions (until there is one). —Bagumba (talk) 08:52, 12 May 2025 (UTC)

::Yeah, I was thinking of making up a big cheat sheet with all the categories listed etc. Then again, being the lazy bastard that I am, I'll just edit one at a time and wait for a revert. More fun that way! John 'Lazy Man' Guadagno. Bringingthewood (talk) 20:20, 12 May 2025 (UTC)

NBA image question

So I don't know how much you read/edit team season articles, but at 2023–24 Cleveland Cavaliers season#Roster, there's an [https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cavs_23-24_Roster.png image of the team roster] (which comes across as peculiar since it's something I've never seen before on WP). It's apparently sourced to someone's blog, but I can't tell if they actually hold the rights, or where the individual portraits came from. What do you make of it? Is it validly licensed? Left guide (talk) 11:12, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

:@Left guide: First time I've seen something like that. I've only dealt with low-res pics the uploader passes off as their own, or ones which I can find the original. It's dubious that a sparse blog actually is the owner of these images. Likely from an album, program, or press release. —Bagumba (talk) 23:24, 13 May 2025 (UTC)

:@Left guide: For such an obscure and sporadic blog, it seems like like there might be some relationship with the uploader and the site when the blog's image (https://thelandsports.wordpress.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/screenshot-2025-05-05-19.26.52.png) was uploaded on May 5, the same day it was uploaded to Commons. PNGs are often screen shots. And it seems they have tried to upload images from them before, citing their "free" licensing from [https://thelandsports.wordpress.com/2024/04/04/commons-policy/ a blog post from that very same day]. Coupled with the past deletions on the uploader's talk page, it seems license laundering is a concern here. —Bagumba (talk) 07:53, 16 May 2025 (UTC)

::Yeah, I actually had a hunch that the uploader may be the blog owner (or otherwise related). Not sure how to explain, just a gut feeling. I wasn't very concerned with the possibility of the uploader having ripped it from the blog. My main concern was whether the blog themselves actually owns the rights. You're usually waaaay more well-versed in this type of stuff than I am, so my explanations may sometimes (accidentally) be incomplete, ambiguous, or misleading to you. Apologies for not having been clearer upfront. And thanks for the thorough investigation, you're doing far more than I expected or imagined. Left guide (talk) 08:15, 16 May 2025 (UTC)

:::@Left guide: Far more than I expected too LOL. Will see if either of us gets to reporting it (be my guest haha). —Bagumba (talk) 08:36, 16 May 2025 (UTC)

::::Hey, I was the one who successfully tracked down the Russell Westbrook image for you, so I think you owe me one ;) Like basketball, Wikipedia is more fun when keeping score. Jk LOL Left guide (talk) 09:03, 16 May 2025 (UTC)

1935 USA Indoor Track and Field Championship

Hey, I know this is a big favor to ask, but I was wondering if you may be able to help me find the results for the 60 metre dash at the 1935 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships, known as the National AAU Championships back then, on that magical newspaper website you got. On the page here on wiki, it only shows Ben Johnson's gold medal time, but not for silver or bronze, which I believe Jesse Owens and Eulace Peacock received, but can’t confirm. The best I could find is a newspaper article mentioning Ben Johnson defeating Owens, Peacock and Sam Maniaci in the final, but there’s no mention of who specifically took the silver and bronze (see below link). I’d be really grateful if you can find something, thanks! GOAT Bones231012 (talk) 20:07, 17 May 2025 (UTC)

::@GOAT Bones231012: Track is not my thing, but the finishes can be found [https://www.newspapers.com/article/wilkes-barre-times-leader/172595244/ here]. I'm not readily able to find times mentioned for the others, but the site is sometimes tricky to search. Have you applied for Newspapers.com? Regards. —Bagumba (talk) 01:35, 18 May 2025 (UTC)

:::Legend, thank you so much! Although probably not enough to add to the 1935 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships page without the actual times, this is at least enough to call Mr. Owens a silver medalist, which in full disclosure is what I was really after as I have been editing his page relentlessly over the past week trying to improve it. And don’t get me wrong I’d love to get a subscription to that website, I’m just too cheap😅 GOAT Bones231012 (talk) 01:50, 18 May 2025 (UTC)

Redirect page deletion question

Hey. Carmelo Alas is a redirect page. It originally redirected to Mel Alas, which itself was recently changed to a redirect. So now Carmelo Alas redirects to an article that does not mention that name. Is this eligible for deletion? DaHuzyBru (talk) 08:55, 18 May 2025 (UTC)

:@DaHuzyBru: "Mel Alas" is listed there though, so one could argue a redirect from his full name is a valid search term. In any event, deletion would need to go through WP:RFD, if you still think there is a case.—Bagumba (talk) 09:14, 18 May 2025 (UTC)

Fair use image concern

So at the Vince Lombardi Trophy article, I'm doubtful that the image :File:Rob Gronkowski denting the Lombardi Trophy.jpg meets fair use requirements, particularly WP:NFCC8. May I ask your opinion on this? Left guide (talk) 11:37, 20 May 2025 (UTC)

:@Left guide: I wonder if the incident is trivial and WP:NOTDIARY, and deleting it would make the NFCC issue moot. Failing that, it's subjective whether it's essential for critical commentary or not i.e. see who shows up to the discussion. Good luck. —Bagumba (talk) 12:36, 20 May 2025 (UTC)

::Yeah I was thinking that too. One interesting point about NFCC8 is that the fair use validity is based on how it influences the reader's understanding of the article topic (as opposed to the specific detail it illustrates), which in this case is the Lombardi Trophy in general. In that light, its educational value is pretty dubious. If the incident meets WP:NEVENT for its own article (which seems very unlikely), then I can see the image possibly qualifying as fair use for that article. As for discussion, I'd prefer to bypass that and just PROD it, which is allowed for files on en.wiki. Thanks for the feedback. Left guide (talk) 13:07, 20 May 2025 (UTC)

Game-winning NBA playoff buzzer beaters

Hey, so I discovered that the topic of game-winning NBA playoff buzzer beaters seems to meet WP:NLIST: [https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nba/news/derrick-white-michael-jordan-game-winning-buzzer-beater-nba-playoffs-history/utbtsqqeboqutkdpn5kewszm][https://www.si.com/nba/2017/05/10/nba-playoffs-history-best-buzzer-beaters][http://www.espn.com/espn/page2/story?page=list/nba_buzzerbeaters][https://www.theringer.com/2020/02/18/nba/nba-buzzer-beaters-leaders-history][https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/sanfrancisco/news/5-best-nba-playoff-game-winning-buzzer-beaters/][https://www.complex.com/sports/a/doug-sibor/the-greatest-buzzer-beaters-in-nba-playoff-history]. Accordingly, I've started Draft:List of game-winning buzzer beaters in the NBA playoffs. Wanna help? Left guide (talk) 08:43, 22 May 2025 (UTC)

:Looks like you're on your way. "Shot description" seems both mundane and potentially rife for WP:OR, but maybe that's me. —Bagumba (talk) 04:06, 23 May 2025 (UTC)

::Thanks for the assistance and encouragement. I think the shot descriptions are a key piece of useful info for readers; big difference between a layup and a half-court heave for example. And so far, the "tip-in" and "spinning layup" are directly supported by [https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nba/news/derrick-white-michael-jordan-game-winning-buzzer-beater-nba-playoffs-history/utbtsqqeboqutkdpn5kewszm the Sporting News source]. I seem to still have that damn writer's block on fleshing out prose LOL, so that's an area that could use help if you're interested. Left guide (talk) 04:50, 23 May 2025 (UTC)

:::i wasn't saying it was you who would OR haha. The series result (did they win?) might be another worthwhile column. —Bagumba (talk) 04:54, 23 May 2025 (UTC)

::::Yeah I know you meant that generally haha. I also try to forecast what hypothetical drive-by IP editors might do, if possible. Honestly, a series results column might lean too much towards OR, and I'd like to be reasonable about not having too many columns, and furthermore my last edit links the round directly to the round description on the season playoff page which may be sufficient. Another possible option could be to highlight the rows or cells based on whether they won or lost the series, to avoid having too many columns. Left guide (talk) 05:05, 23 May 2025 (UTC)

:::::{{tqq|a series results column might lean too much towards OR}}: I had already checked, the SN source seems to mention it for each one. —Bagumba (talk) 05:09, 23 May 2025 (UTC)
