Will miss you
The encyclopedia is much richer for your presence, and is now much poorer for your leaving. Some things are impossible to replace. My condolences to all who loved BeenAroundAWhile, his contributions to societal knowledge were immense. As for his considerable legacy on Wikipedia, at the moment he is the 712th most prolific English language Wikipedian of all time. Randy Kryn (talk) 13:04, 3 October 2022 (UTC)

To the family: I'm sorry for your loss. BeenAroundAWhile was a valued contributor here for many years. He did a lot of maintenance work, as well as improving articles on a wide range of topics (especially topics relevant to the LA area). If you're curious to see a list of some of them, [https://xtools.wmflabs.org/topedits/en.wikipedia.org/BeenAroundAWhile/0 this is a list by number of edits he made to them].
We have a community newspaper, the Signpost, which may want to run an obituary of some sort. If you feel comfortable sharing (and if you think he would've been ok with it), you could share a little more information about him and/or anything he has said about his engagement with Wikipedia. His account has been blocked (a common precautionary measure), so you'll need to create a different account to respond to this (or email me directly and I'll pass the information along to the Signpost writers [ rhododendrites at gmail dot com ]). — Rhododendrites talk \\ 13:42, 3 October 2022 (UTC)
My condolences to the family and friends of this person. Andre🚐 00:13, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
He will be missed here and surely so to those in his non-digital life. May his memory be a blessing to all those who knew him. EvergreenFir (talk) 04:46, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
It's always sad when we lose a long-time Wikipedian, especially one who has contributed so much. Condolences to all his family and friends. --Malcolmxl5 (talk) 13:40, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
RIP, a user with an amazing story. There is [https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/legacyremembers/george-garrigues-obituary?id=36677801 an obituary here] with details about his upcoming memorial service (which will be held both in-person and virtually). Graham87 17:39, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
We have lost an outstanding editor who contributed so much to this encyclopedia. Cullen328 (talk) 17:43, 4 October 2022 (UTC)
I spent some time combing through his contributions to get to know him as a person and editor here and I must say, he has quite an extraordinary story that will continue to be told to generations of new editors and readers of this encyclopedia. If they seek to listen his Song will continue to be heard. It is a part of his family, I am so sorry for your loss, and, in varying ways, a part of each of us impacted by his life, his time, and his energy. It is a great loss, especially for the future, but it is also a celebration for such a beautiful and amazing life lived, experienced, shared, and now carried by each of us, each in our own way. You will be missed but you will continue to be loved and remembered. Thank you for making your impact and leaving your amazing contributions for us to enjoy. --ARoseWolf 12:36, 5 October 2022 (UTC)
- I'm sorry I didn't get to know George better. But we did exchange a couple of messages after I, then editor-in-chief of The Signpost, noticed that he was giving advice to our reporters and editors. It was almost always spot-on. We'll certainly publish an obituary at the end of this month. Smallbones(smalltalk) 00:01, 6 October 2022 (UTC)
BeenAroundAWhile was my uncle and I thought people here might be interested to know that his very last post to Wikipedia was just hours before he was admitted to the hospital with a brain tumor. It seems that he'd found a stray comma in someone else's work and fixed it. Wikipedia was an important part of his life right to the very end! His family is very proud of what he did as part of your community. Trinsics (talk) 18:50, 8 October 2022 (UTC)
To be honest, I was checking his contribs occasionally and it was when I saw he had not edited since July, I began to fear the worst. And now it's confirmed. Very sad day. I'm not familiar with him on here but obviously he made an impact. My condolences to his family — Python Drink (talk) 23:18, 8 October 2022 (UTC)
- I wasn't familiar with BeenAroundAWhile but I was familar with his work and we will miss him and all that he contributed to the project. Thank you so much for letting us know. He did a helluva lot of editing here! Liz Read! Talk! 20:02, 21 October 2022 (UTC)
- My first and only actual (and brief) chat with him was hardly more than one year ago, but his name had been popping up all over the place on my watchlist. The only reason to ever check his edits (upon seeing them on my watchlist :-) was to perhaps learn something. Peace to his family and friends. He charmed and impressed me, not only with his awe-inspiring age ... he was a wonderful editor, and I miss him. ---Sluzzelin talk 20:29, 21 October 2022 (UTC)
My interactions with BeenAroundAWhile were brief, but memorable. He was kind enough to thank me for a few Los Angeles area-related edits I made. Although we never conversed at length, I enjoyed looking over his edits, and learned much from his straightforward, "stick to the facts" style. Words cannot sufficiently convey my admiration for his work here and I can only regret never having had the pleasure of knowing him better. My sincerest prayers of comfort to him and his family.
