Image captions

File:AbecedarioCanoa.png

Thanks

˜˜˜˜

Please check back at Draft:Norbert Francis, where I've added formatting to make the captions appear on two images; one of them is the one I've put here, giving you both the finished image and the code I used. Basically, images generally have up to five components:

  1. The image name, which here is "File:AbecedarioCanoa.png"
  2. The code "thumb", which causes it to appear as a thumbnail; I don't think it's possible to display a caption without using the thumbnail feature
  3. The orientation, here "right", which causes it to display at right, left, or (maybe) center depending on what you type
  4. The size in pixels, here 300
  5. The caption, here "AbecedarioCanoa"

I don't know where you want these images to appear on the Norbert Francis page, so please go there and change them to how you like it; I just added them as examples. Nyttend (talk) 13:11, 27 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks a million Nyttend for helping me with my photos and captions.

Where you placed them is exactly where I was thinking of putting them.

Now my question is: how can I edit the captions themselves?

Appreciate greatly your kind assistance.

˜˜˜˜Bobowikibobo

:Just remove what you don't want and type more. For the image on this page, if you want the caption to be "Example", take 300px|AbecedarioCanoa and replace it with 300px|Example. Nyttend (talk) 02:36, 28 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks Nyttend!

:Some additional comments — (1) Regarding [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=649293477&oldid=649141995 these edits], it looks like you've figured out how to format an external link. Perhaps you already know this, but if you don't supply a caption (for example, if instead of [http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11458840 The sounds of poetry viewed as music] you'd simply put brackets around the URL, i.e. [http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11458840], the whole thing just displays as a number — for example, see [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page]. The numbers go sequentially from the top of the page; if someone adds another one higher up on the page, the number of your link will automatically be modified. (2) External links normally don't belong in the body of the article, but references are different: in most cases, it's helpful to add a link to an online resource as you just did. (3) The best way to number your notes is not to use the 1, 2, etc. tags. Instead, you can just place them in <ref> tags, and then add a link to {{tl|reflist}} at the bottom of the page; the references will automatically collect there at the bottom. Nyttend (talk) 03:52, 1 March 2015 (UTC)

Yes, that's right. It should be friendly to modifications that other people may want to make. When I get a chance, I'll try to figure this out. As you can see I've been trying things out in a random way without studying the wiki format guidelines. All this is pretty interesting. How Wikipedia is an information processing culture onto itself. Thanks again.

:Hey, don't think that I'm complaining: there's no requirement that you study the wiki format guidelines, and it's completely fine just to try things out in a random way. Regarding the "inline" external links, that's something I've not seen you do; it's just that people might object, and I'm trying to prevent those objections from happening. Regarding the links in the references, I'm saying that you've done the right thing; basically the only time when they're unacceptable is when the link goes to a copyright-infringing page, because it would leave us open to charges of contributory copyright infringement. Definitely not something to worry about when you're working with governmental, academic, or major corporate sources. And finally, with the reference numbering, this is a technical suggestion: if you use the <ref> tags, you can click on the little bracketed number that results, and it will scroll down to the full reference, or you can hover your mouse over the little bracketed number, and it will show you what's given down below. Policy requires that sources be cited, and 1, 2, etc. accomplishes that; the <ref> tags are simply more convenient, even for you, once you get used to them. See down below for how this works. Nyttend (talk) 12:16, 2 March 2015 (UTC)
