Managing a conflict of interest

File:Information.svg Hello, Citizen100. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about in the page Paul David Manson, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. We ask that you:

  • avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, company, organization or competitors;
  • propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (see the {{tl|request edit}} template);
  • disclose your COI when discussing affected articles (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Also please note that editing for the purpose of advertising, publicising, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you.{{#ifexpr: ({{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}} - 20181101120814) < 5000000000 | {{PAGENAME}} | }}Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 12:08, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi, Diannaa. This is my first time editing on Wikipedia, so forgive me if I have made mistakes. Paul Manson is my dad. He's 84 years old and updating his Wikipedia page is long overdue. When doing this, I used John De Chastelaine's page as an example because he and Dad served at the same time (General De Chastelaine took over command of the Canadian Armed Forces from my father). I notice that General De Chastelaine's page has very few references, so I don't understand how the rules can be so stringent for one person and not another. In any case, all of the information I added is factual and was an important part of Dad's life and career and I believe I have now added suitable sources for all of them. Hi, again. In rereading all of the details on the page, the only statement that was not neutral was the comment about him being a "skilled musician", so I have changed that sentence to: Manson loves to read, golf and play trombone.Citizen100 (talk) 15:45, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

:You are missing some of the key points from WP:COI, such as "COI editing is strongly discouraged on Wikipedia. It undermines public confidence and risks causing public embarrassment to the individuals and companies being promoted. Editors with a COI are sometimes unaware of whether or how much it has influenced their editing. If COI editing causes disruption, an administrator may opt to place blocks on the involved accounts." and specifically at WP:COIEDIT:

:* you are strongly discouraged from editing affected articles directly;

:* you may propose changes on talk pages (by using the {{tlx|request edit}} template), or by posting a note at the COI noticeboard, so that they can be peer reviewed;

:The article has been completely sanitized and turned into a fluff piece. As per WP:COI please cease editing the article and non-COI editors will figure out what to do with it. - Ahunt (talk) 15:52, 1 November 2018 (UTC)

Okay - I will leave it in your hands and I won't do any more editing. Citizen100 (talk) 16:01, 1 November 2018 (UTC)
