Question for article
Hey Daniel,
my name is Ben Dreyfuss. I’m a journalist. I’m writing an article about Wikipedia and for the lede I’m mentioning this discussion that you and some other editors had earlier this year that led to deleting the pages about me and my sister. The article isn’t me whining about how I don’t have a page but it’s the hook for a different topic relating to Wikipedia editing culture. I was hoping I might be able to ask you some questions about the general process you guys use for this stuff. Nothing “gotcha” or anything. But I don’t know any Wikipedia editors and s that deletion page was just brought to my attention I thought you’d be a good person to reach out to. My email is bendreyfuss at gmail dot com if you’re open to chatting with me!
best,
ben 2600:8804:2311:2E00:94DC:B34F:99E7:53D6 (talk) 02:34, 17 November 2024 (UTC)
:Hi Ben, thanks for reaching out. All press enquiries need to go through Wikipedia:Contact us/Press and partnerships first. If they give the green light, I'm happy to assist. Cheers, Daniel (talk) 08:28, 17 November 2024 (UTC)

ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message
Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on {{#time:l, j F Y|{{Arbitration Committee candidate/data|2024|end}}-1 day}}. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2024 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the Special:SecurePoll/vote/{{Arbitration Committee candidate/data. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{tlx|NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:14, 19 November 2024 (UTC)

Thank you for standing for arbitrator. I am far away from it all (travel, mourning), not in the mood, so just an informal question you can answer or ignore:
- Liviu Holender chose lieder by five composers whose music was banned by the Nazis—Schreker, Zemlinsky, Mahler, Korngold and Schönberg—for a recital at the Oper Frankfurt.
What does this 2024 DYK tell you about infoboxes for classical composers in 2024? -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:27, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
:Hi Gerda, I am also travelling (in Central America currently) — I must admit, I have no idea what that hook from 2024 tells me about infoboxes. Not really a specialist subject of mine, or even one where I have any sort of institutional knowledge. Apologies, Daniel (talk) 16:48, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
:: Well, 11 years ago infoboxes for classical composers where a hot topic. If you look at the talk pages of the 5 composers, do you think they still are? -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:35, 20 November 2024 (UTC)

:: November was rich in sadness and happiness for me, expressed in music. Regarding my question, I found one so far who looked into the matter and didn't stay at the surface, Simonm223. There are two composers on the Main page today, Siegfried Thiele and Aaron Copland. I find the response of my friend Jerome Kohl to a question on Copland's article talk promising. What do you think? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 08:53, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
:: Today's story comes from a DYK about a concert that fascinated me, and you can listen! For my taste, the hook has too little music - I miss the unusual scoring and a specific dedication - but it comes instead with a name good for viewcount. I'd still like to know what you think about the Copland posts. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:55, 6 December 2024 (UTC)
:: On the Main page today Jean Sibelius on his birthday. Listening to Beethoven's Fifth from the opening of Notre-Dame de Paris. We sang in choirs today. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:47, 8 December 2024 (UTC)
:: Listen today to the (new) Perplexities after Escher. - Congratulations to being elected! Could you look at Samuel Barber and tell me if you miss something in his infobox? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:31, 12 December 2024 (UTC)
:: Listen today to Beethoven's 3rd cello sonata, on his birthday - it was a hook in the 2020 DYK set when his 250th birthday was remembered. I picked a recording with Antonio Meneses, because he was on my sad list this year, and I was in Brazil (see places), and I love his playing. - I can report happily that the Barber situation was solved. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:18, 16 December 2024 (UTC)

- Following an RFC, the policy on restoration of adminship has been updated. All former administrators may now only regain the tools following a request at the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard within 5 years of their most recent admin action. Previously this applied only to administrators deysopped for inactivity.
- Following a request for comment, a new speedy deletion criterion, T5, has been enacted. This applies to template subpages that are no longer used.

Welcome to the 2025 Arbitration Committee
{{Ivmbox|1=Congratulations on your success in the elections and welcome to the 2025 Arbitration Committee. This is the first part of your induction onto the Arbitration Committee.
Please use the EmailUser function to indicate the email address you'd like to use for ArbCom and functionary business.

::Yes it's always said small number. That number refers to the orientation emails which are reasonably small in number (for a new non-CUOS arb you have: AC mailing lists (though this message can be skipped depending on how it's setup), arbwiki, cu email list, os mailing list, and functionaries; perhaps also VRT if they're new there and that's the worst case). Activity in January
Just a quick note from me—
I was fairly open and transparent in my nomination statement and answers to questions, regarding my planned inactivity between October 2024 and mid-January 2025; it is the reason why I handed back the tools in October. (Speaking of, I will be requesting the tools back in late December; [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia%3AArbitration_Committee_Elections_December_2024%2FCandidates%2FDaniel%2FQuestions&diff=1260084325&oldid=1260012788 context as to timing]).
November & December have largely been spent on vacation in North & Central America (plus transiting home via Europe) or, when at home, dealing with what we call "wedding season". Upcoming in January, I have a further two weddings, a jam-packed international trip and a week-long vacation to the Australian Open in the first three weeks.
Due to this, I will start the 2025 Committee on the "Inactive" list, and will ask the Clerks to move me to Inactive on all matters that are open on 1 January. I will still be active on emails and behind-the-scenes (especially important, I imagine, for the on-boarding processes), but will not have the time to dedicate to being totally informed on case matters during this short period.
I intend to return to full activity on or around Monday 20 January, which is when I return to my home city. Update: I'll be able to be active sooner than 20 January (likely a week or so sooner), so won't go on the inactive list as originally planned. From there, my next vacation plan is a couple of weeks in August, which is fortunately (for activity purposes) / unfortunately (for wanting to sit on a beach drinking cocktails purposes) a long way away.
I am very aware of some of the challenges the '24 Committee faced with activity, and will do my best to a) be active for extended periods and whenever possible; and b) be as transparent as possible with both the Committee and the community regarding periods of inactivity, and err on the side of caution in moving myself to the Inactive list for planned vacations or unplanned periods of inactivity to keep Committee business moving.

Question About Formal Tone and AI Concerns
Hi Daniel,
I just wanted to ask, does using a formal tone in my responses mean I'm using AI? I’ve been trying to keep my responses clear and respectful, but I didn’t realize that could be seen as AI-generated.
Is it a problem to write in a more formal style here, or does that automatically raise concerns about using AI? I'm just trying to understand what's expected.
Thanks for your input! JESUS (talk) 20:39, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
:Two (out of two I checked) of your posts came up as 90% AI-written according to the AI detector I used (which is falliable, but that's such a coincidence). Further, the subheadings that you used were distinctive of AI-generated messages. I still believe you were using AI to generate those two messages. (By contrast, this message registers 0%.) Daniel (talk) 22:22, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
::Also, [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Jesuspaul502&oldid=1239273773 this]. Daniel (talk) 22:23, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
:::What's the current guidance on blocking AI trolling, which this clearly is? BusterD (talk) 23:04, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
::::I don't feel good about feeding back the "tells" either ("subheadings") BusterD (talk) 23:06, 25 December 2024 (UTC)
:::::There's no automatic prohibition in project-space, so it needs to be judged through the lens of general disruption. The use of subheadings is both a tell but also part of the disruptive nature of LLM-generated projectspace postings, so I don't think it's fair to say "you're being disruptive" but not explain how it's disruptive. Daniel (talk) 00:18, 26 December 2024 (UTC)
::::::In response to your fairness objection, I think it's wrong to knowingly assist in calibration of such models. We don't feed trolls, we shouldn't tutor AIs. BusterD (talk) 00:49, 26 December 2024 (UTC)

Hougang knife attack AfD
Hello, I wanted to ask about the close at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hougang knife attack. You found that the consensus of the !voters was to merge the article, but none of the !voters supported a merge. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 23:35, 28 December 2024 (UTC)
:Hi Thebiguglyalien, that seems odd — I agree, it should definitely be "redirect" rather than "merge". Fortunately in this situation a redirect is simply a merge with no content copied, so no really big changes. I'll go and update the close and the paperwork accordingly. Thanks for the heads-up, Daniel (talk) 08:59, 29 December 2024 (UTC)

My comment wasn't intended as opposing a restoration to draft, so much as letting The-Pope know 1) that they wouldn't be missing anything if they started working on a new draft without waiting for the old one, and 2) that if they did work from the old one, that the misleading statements in it needed fixing. —Cryptic 23:51, 5 January 2025 (UTC)

Buccaneers–Eagles rivalry
Not necessarily saying the article should have been kept, but I noticed your comment {{tq|The couple of keep-leaning comments, and the sources presented by said comments, were refuted by noting their lack of independence. Alvaldi's comment at 20:08 7 January 2025 is a nice summation of this.}} I think its worth noting that Alvaldi said to keep the article on the basis that there was enough independent, in-depth sources for notability (cited [https://957benfm.com/2024/01/12/tampa-vs-philadelphia-rivalry-has-a-deep-history/ Tampa Vs. Philadelphia Rivalry Has A Deep History] (2024), [https://eu.theledger.com/story/news/2009/10/11/buccaneers-eagles-renew-old-rivalry/7988079007/ Buccaneers, Eagles renew old rivalry] (2009), [https://www.newspapers.com/image/219789506/?match=1&terms=buccaneers-eagles%20rivalry Bucs, Eagles know each other well - Rivalry forms as they've met 6 times since 1999] (2003), [https://www.newspapers.com/image/319679839/?match=1&terms=buccaneers-eagles%20rivalry Emotional opener - Eagles, Buccaneers renew rivalry at new stadium] (2003).). There were a few other sources that were non-independent that were presented, but a good number of them were actually independent. BeanieFan11 (talk) 03:07, 10 January 2025 (UTC)
:Yes I agree, but the two sentences are somewhat separate - the attempted refbombing of the debate, Alvaldi aside, were of sources that are "probably perfectly fine to use them in the article to source some facts, but as they are not independent sources so they do not help establish that the article passes WP:GNG which is needed for it not to be deleted" (to use Alvaldi's words). Josh and yourself showed a consensus that Alvaldi's sources were marginal, and Alvaldi (funnily enough, despite !voting keep) refuted the attempted refspam by KatoKungLee. Have [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia%3AArticles_for_deletion%2FBuccaneers%E2%80%93Eagles_rivalry&diff=1268518525&oldid=1268500471 clarified my wording] to make this sentiment more obvious. Its 3am here and I was about to vote for deletion on this while typing my rationale, but I see that you've already closed it. :Jeraxmoira, STONEX was reopened because it was closed by a non-administrator (very different reason). I'll reopen it on the basis you're about to offer a contrarian view to the close (and the closed was based off no participation), please vote ASAP as it may be closed by anyone else. Syntax cleanup on your protected header page
Hey there. A small group of editors is working on cleaning up syntax errors on Wikipedia pages, and one of your protected pages has a few errors that need tidying. If you don't mind replacing User talk:Daniel/Archive/Header with the contents of [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Jonesey95/sandbox&oldid=1274680152 this version of my sandbox], that would be great. The changes address four errors on the page, and the page is transcluded 115 times, so fixing the errors on this one page will fix nearly 500 errors. Let me know if you have any questions.
If you don't want the header's div tags to be closed when the page is transcluded, you can put them in noinclude tags, but then you, or someone else, will need to put two closing div tags on 115 pages. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:54, 8 February 2025 (UTC)
:This has the unintended consequence of closing the div box before the text starts. I've updated it for now, but this will need to be amended on each of the 115 individual pages at some point in the future if the div tags being closed is an issue. Thanks, Daniel (talk) 20:14, 8 February 2025 (UTC)
