Cheaper
Hi EurovisionLibrarian. I'm reviewing the main ESC article and I came across another statement that I see misleading, and I would need your expertise.
The Origins and history section begins like: "The Eurovision Song Contest was developed by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) as an experiment in live television broadcasting and a way to produce cheaper programming for national broadcasting organisations."
Beyond the word "experiment" which is debatable, due to the difference between something pioneering and an experiment (I saw that the 1956 article also says "experiment"), and that there were earlier transmissions via Eurovision, my biggest concern is about the word "cheaper". In addition to the negative connotation of the word, as if they were seeking to lower the quality of the programming, I don't think using the word "cheaper" to say that they were trying to reduce the costs of something that is very expensive is accurate. What I don't see is that lowering costs was really one of the initial goals of the ESC. To cut costs, they organized the biggest event they could think of?
Could you please help me with this? What do you think? Ferclopedio (talk) 21:04, 19 March 2025 (UTC)
:Hi @Ferclopedio!
:Thank you for bringing that up and reaching out! I've decided to create a topic on the talk page of the article for more visibility and transparence, where I sum up my thoughts about the sentence. EurovisionLibrarian (talk) 14:47, 23 March 2025 (UTC)
