Hi Mariah. I'm Clovermoss. I'm still trying to figure out how this works, but my understanding is that I was randomly assigned as a potential mentor to you? I signed up for this, so I am somewhat prepared to do so. Is there anything I can do to help you in regards to figuring out editing on Wikipedia? I've been editing since 2018 so I'm likely capable of answering most of your questions. On the off chance I don't know something, I'll be able to find you an answer from someone who does. :I see on your userpage that you're interested in translating content from Spanish! That's great. I don't know Spanish, but I had French-language schooling growing up, so I know more than just English. Unfortunately I'm not completely fluent, but I know enough to follow conversations and read books in French. Have you been active on other projects? Or attended an edit-a-thon? I see that you've already figured out how to add a userbox to your userpage. If you don't think you need my help I'll leave you alone, I promise. I'm just trying to be helpful. :This is actually my first time on Wikipedia. It had not occurred to me to edit an article until I started looking for ways to gain translation experience. So, while I know how to translate, I'm completely clueless as to the procedures of labeling or formatting edits and articles. I didn't even notice the little box to explain my edit until I'd republished the translation of the article a few times. I guess I don't know enough to ask specific questions, but I'd appreciate any tips about the basics of Wikipedia editing.

::So if you're interested in translation, this page kind of explains the process (although not that well, now that I'm looking at it) and :Category:Articles needing translation from Spanish Wikipedia. But you don't have to rush into anything if you don't feel comfortable with it. You can always explore that as an option later if you want.

::The Wikipedia Adventure covers some of the basics of editing as an interactive tutorial. That's probably a good place to start. I used to edit another website that used MediaWiki before I started here, so I kind of live and breathe wikimarkup, but I get that it's not exactly intuitive if you're trying to learn it for the first time. There's the Wikipedia:Sandbox if you ever want to just try and experiment with something. If you're editing an article, you can click preview on the bottom on the screen before publish as many times as you need to, which is useful if you're trying to figure out how something works. Feel free to ask me questions, though, no matter how little it seems. We all have to start somewhere. I'm fairly active onwiki at the moment so I can likely get back to you quickly, but you can also ask questions at the Teahouse.

::Help:Referencing for beginners is also a useful resource. If you ever see people using a lot of acronyms and have no idea what they mean, you can look it up at Wikipedia:Wikipedia abbreviations.

:::Thanks for the helpful links! I focused on The Wikipedia Adventure for now -- it gave me a lot of basic information. The only thing I'm getting stuck on now is converting Spanish citations to the English wiki versions. But I'm guessing I'll have to find a Wikipedia translator's forum to get help with that. ::::Are you having a hard time with citations in general or just Spanish ones? Citations don't have to be in English, see Compagnons de Saint-Laurent for an example of what that looks like in references. I just use the citeweb template, the URL, the title, etc, except filled in with that language. You can do that by clicking 'edit', switching to source editor if you aren't already using it, clicking cite, click template, and then if you're citing a website you can use cite web. If an article doesn't have a references section, create it with two equal signs making the section heading and putting reflist underneath it with curly brackets. Does that make sense? I can take screenshots if that makes it easier to understand. The other thing that's important to do if you're going to translate content from the Spanish Wikipedia is to to use a specific edit summary for attribution. Does that answer your question? Or did I just make things more confusing?

::::I don't think we nessecarily have a specfic forum for translators, but the Teahouse is seen by many experienced editors who usually have answers to questions that can sometimes be more complicated. ::::::I think I might understand what's confusing to you now? So in this edit [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Jos%C3%A9_Costas_Gual&type=revision&diff=1088587499&oldid=1088587168], a bot fixed your reference for you. Some templates are used across projects, but some aren't, so you might have to find alternatives in certain circumstances. It took me awhile to figure out how formatting worked when I was trying to translate Oui ou non, for example. The amount of tables/templates was a bit of a headache, honestly. You can see how it looks at fr:Oui ou non and clicking "modifier code". You'll see some differences, like a =chanson parameter instead =song, etc.

::::::Specifically, this demonstrates what I was trying to explain at around the 2 minute mark. If your screen doesn't look like that when you go to edit, you see where that pencil symbol is near the top right? Click it and switch to source editing from visual editing. How have things been going?

Hi Mariah. How has the Wikipedia Adventure been going? I haven't done the Wikipedia Adventure in years and now that I'm looking at it, I forgot how bizzare it was. But do you think it's been useful, apart from all that?

I was reading what your current userpage is like and I think you're off to a great start. Maybe you'd be interested in Women in Red? It's a WikiProject dedicated to reducing the gender gap on Wikipedia. There's a lot of potential biographies of women scientists over at Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Redlist index, you can narrow it down to specific scientific fields, like biology, or medicine. There's also this useful page about identifying reliable medical sources that can be used on Wikipedia. The gist is medical reviews published by reliable medical journals, etc, which I'm sure you're already aware of, but it still might be a good idea to check it out. ::I agree that bizzare can be interesting! Eccentric is the name of the game. But not everyone feels the same way about everything, so I'm glad it's part of the charm and that you did actually find it useful. I'm glad the link to the organized index was useful, too. Another thing that might be useful is to learn how inter-language links work since you're interested in translating content and it's a little less time-consuming than posting URLs every time. So you can type in es:Miren Basaras if you want to link to the Spanish version of the Wikipedia article. You can also created a "piped link" like this (look at my comment in the source editor to see what that looks like exactly in wiki markup) if you're wondering how that works, since I've done that a few times. My understanding is that the typical American academic semester hasn't ended yet, so it totally makes sense if you're on in off and on doses. You're not obligated to edit Wikipedia regardless.
