User talk:Mjroots/Beta (1864 barque)#As Beta
As ''Beta''
:{{tq|In 1881, Tonnes Christian was sold to Aadals Brug, Christiania and renamed Beta.}}
I realize that's what your source says, but wouldn't this sale have taken place in 1880 since she sailed as the Beta in October 1880? I saw another source about this issue elsewhere, but it may take some time to track it down. Keep in mind, she arrived on Maui as the Beta in February, so the sale would have taken place in 1880, but perhaps the paperwork didn't go through until 1881? Viriditas (talk) 22:08, 5 May 2025 (UTC)
:{{Re|Viriditas}} - you need to add in your information. We can tweak the text to something like {{tq|by 1881, she had been sold to Aadals Brug, Christiana}} (it having been established that she had already been renamed by then). Mjroots (talk) 05:39, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
::Lots of sources. You can start with Lloyd's Register of Shipping 1880.[https://archive.org/details/HECROS1880/page/n967/mode/2up?q=Beta] You can see that it contradicts your own sources. It was called Beta while still owned by Birkeland as early as 1879. Now, what's weird is that it appears in the shipping book for 1880, and most of the other entries show 1880 or 1881, so that's odd. Why is it shoehorned in like that? But we know for a fact that it left Drammen on October 27, 1880, as the Beta, and arrived on Maui as the Beta early that next year. There is extensive documentation on this. Lloyd's Register of Shipping 1879 still lists Sir John Lawrence.[https://archive.org/details/HECROS1879/page/n1167/mode/2up] I couldn't find Tonnes Christian except as a listing of the old name under the Beta for 1880 (linked above). Perhaps this is where the error comes in. It looks like it was sold between 1879 and 1880 to Aadals Brug and renamed. I recall seeing a source that says the sale occurred in early 1880, but I've been unable to find it. I will keep looking. Viriditas (talk) 09:37, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
:::{{Re|Viriditas}} - I've tweaked the article to show that she was named Beta by 1880. Lloyd's Register missing Tonnes Christian is probably due to her being sold abroad and that fact not being communicated. Now that the article establishes her being called Beta in 1880, will you please add in the Hawaii stuff. Mjroots (talk) 04:52, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
::::I will do so tomorrow, HST. If you are still open to me submitting a double hook for this and the other article, let me know. It would focus on the role of the Beta in the Scandinavian migration. But, if you have another hook in mind altogether for just your ship, that's fine too, but let me know. Viriditas (talk) 08:57, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
:::::Done. Viriditas (talk) 23:01, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
:::LRS were well aware of the sale and renaming to Tonnes Kristian (as they have it, Tonnes Christian in some other sources). In the 1879 edition the name change from [https://archive.org/details/HECROS1879/page/n811/mode/1up Sir John Lawrence] is noted, and there is a [https://archive.org/details/HECROS1879/page/n1066/mode/1up new entry in the supplement] - the latter shows a LRS survey in London 11/1879, and the original survey report for Birkeland, undertaken 1–18/11/1879 is online [https://hec.lrfoundation.org.uk/archive-library/documents/lrf-pun-lon664-0066-r here].
:::It seems that only one voyage was made under the new name: 18/11/79 cleared London for Baltimore in ballast; 12/1/1880 arrived Hampton Roads from London; 15/8/1880 in the Sound, from New York for orders; 21/8/1880 arrived Karlskrona [all per Lloyd's List, via British Newspaper Archive] - Davidships (talk) 00:48, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
