:Thanks! Looking forward to getting more Wisconsin high school athletic conference articles online. It's actually been a great challenge to some of my previous assumptions to have to go through another round of fact-checking what I've researched. Moserjames79 (talk) 16:40, 12 December 2024 (UTC)

Manual of style formatting

Hi Moserjames79, I just wanted to give you a heads up that when adding section titles (headers) to articles, they should be in sentence case per MOS:Head. The only words in headers that begin with capitals are the first word and any proper nouns. I wish someone had noticed this earlier, as there is now alot of articles to clean up. I fixed a few of them, and will pick away at the rest, so you can keep creating articles without having to go back and fix them. By the way, you have done alot of great work on the articles, and I hope you keep writing more of them. Cmr08 (talk) 05:31, 12 February 2025 (UTC)

:Apologies for that, it's a pet peeve of mine that it not be capitalized, especially with all the research into old newspapers where the headlines are done that way. I can go uncapitalized with heading for future articles, thanks for the heads up Moserjames79 (talk) 11:37, 12 February 2025 (UTC)

About your peer review nominations

Hey Moserjames79! I've had to close a few peer reviews that you opened as, per the process guidelines, only one concurrent nomination per editor is permitted. Badger Conference remains open, as it's the first one you nominated, and I'd recommend focusing on that one before moving back on to the others. Let me know if you have any questions! School Colors

Hi Moserjames79,

Excellent work on the Wisconsin HS Sports Project! As a heads up, I did find some likely updates needed on some school colors and will note them over the next few days. I also have a list of schools where I couldn't verify colors. If I share that list, would you mind sharing sources?

Thanks,

badgeractuary Badgeractuary (talk) 19:22, 25 April 2025 (UTC)

:Yeah, I'll get what I have together. I haven't been super disciplined on keeping sources for colors, but I'm sure I can find corroborating information. Moserjames79 (talk) 19:26, 25 April 2025 (UTC)

::Thanks. I'll break my list up into parts, divided by regions of the state. Feel free to take your time.

:::May be some conjecture for Brooklyn, but the colors for the local snowmobile club are green and gold and they're called the Sno-Hornets (can't post image because it's from their Facebook page. I have an email in to them regarding the source of the colors Moserjames79 (talk) 17:36, 28 April 2025 (UTC)

::::Per the Sno-Hornets: "School colors were green and white per a Brooklyn High School graduate. The snowmobile patch was designed in the early 70's by the daughter of a club member." Moserjames79 (talk) 19:24, 28 April 2025 (UTC)

:::St. Joseph Seminary's red and white colors came from contacting their alumni page on Facebook (and I found their Johawks nickname in the local papers) Moserjames79 (talk) 17:39, 28 April 2025 (UTC)

::::I did not figure that based on the yearbook covers, although there was nothing referencing maroon and white/gray on the inside. Badgeractuary (talk) 20:24, 28 April 2025 (UTC)

:::St. Mary's Oshkosh alum wearing Blue. Seems reasonable the high school team would as well. https://www.newspapers.com/image/246230993/?match=1&terms=%22st.%20mary%22%22greyhounds%22%20blue%20white%20oshkosh

:::I also saw St. Mary's Oshkosh listed as the "Greys", so perhaps they wore blue and grey? It could just be the short form of the word, as well https://www.newspapers.com/image/246136387/?match=1&terms=%22st.%20mary%22%22greyhounds%22%20%22greys%22%20oshkosh Badgeractuary (talk) 11:17, 29 April 2025 (UTC)

:::West Lima (as of 1936) wore royal blue and old gold. https://www.newspapers.com/image/901710154/?match=1&terms=%22west%20lima%22%20%22school%20colors%22 It should be noted that Wauzeka and Readstown didn't have gold listed in their colors at the time, but would eventually add them later. Badgeractuary (talk) 11:51, 29 April 2025 (UTC)

::::Not sure if this was intentional, but an anagram of West Lima's nickname, the Bulldogs, is Blugolds (their school colors) Moserjames79 (talk) 16:15, 29 April 2025 (UTC)

:::::If that was intentional, that's genius Badgeractuary (talk) 16:29, 29 April 2025 (UTC)

:::Maryheart in Pittsville wore gold and purple (similar to the public school at the time, who wore purple and gold): https://www.newspapers.com/image/267490911/?match=1&terms=%22maryheart%20high%20school%22%20%22School%20colors%22 Badgeractuary (talk) 13:40, 29 April 2025 (UTC)

:::A couple more adds:

:::Elroy Hilltoppers wore purple and either white or gold. Band uniforms from 1940: https://www.newspapers.com/image/868705209/?terms=elroy%20purple&match=3, as well as the name of the school newspaper "Purple Quill" lead to purple as the primary color https://www.classmates.com/siteui/yearbooks/4182910541?page=50&searchTerm=elroy%20purple%20quill

:::Walworth Warriors...this is an interesting one. When they played Wilmot in 1952, the newspapers called them the "Gold and Black" https://www.newspapers.com/image/596570813/?match=1&terms=wilmot%20walworth%20gold%20black I only say that's interesting because there was debate about what colors the Sharon/Walworth consolidated high school should use (from 1955), and noted gold was likely, as they are common to both schools. However, nothing referencing black, which apparently also was shared https://www.newspapers.com/image/12612974/?match=1&terms=walworth%20sharon%20%22school%20color%22%20 Badgeractuary (talk) 19:19, 29 April 2025 (UTC)

:::St. Benedict the Moor was called the "Brown Bombers" in the 1940s, and became the "Pacers" when they returned to the Milwaukee Catholic Conference. https://www.newspapers.com/image/334202695/?match=1&terms=%22st.%20benedict%22%22brown%20bombers%22%22milwaukee%22 I can't see them switching colors, so brown and white throughout makes sense.

:::That leaves Roberts, Hartland, AV-W, and Sextonville from my original list. Thanks for being patient with me on this. Badgeractuary (talk) 15:58, 30 April 2025 (UTC)

::::Thanks for doing this, you are an absolute bloodhound when it comes to finding this stuff! Moserjames79 (talk) 16:04, 30 April 2025 (UTC)

::::I reached out to Richland County History Room for Sextonville. They did not have record on school nickname or color. I also sent a question to the Hartland History Room. The website did say it could take some time to respond, but I feel it will be easier than Sextonville. Badgeractuary (talk) 17:02, 30 April 2025 (UTC)

:::Per Peter Close of the St. Croix County Historical Society: "Roberts High School's nickname was the Eagles, their colors were Royal Blue and White. In 1960 Roberts merged with Hammond (who were the Bluejays with Blue and White) and became the Panthers with blue and white." Moserjames79 (talk) 16:40, 30 April 2025 (UTC)

:::For Arbor Vitae-Woodruff, I went off of what the elementary school currently uses (since districts sometimes use this as a way to preserve identities when schools close): nickname is the Muskies and colors are red and black: [https://www.avwschool.org/ AVW School | Arbor Vitae Woodruff] Moserjames79 (talk) 16:43, 30 April 2025 (UTC)

::::This article from 1946 states that AV-W's colors were black and white: [https://www.newspapers.com/image/11916160/?match=1&terms=%22arbor%20vitae-woodruff%22%20muskies%20red%20and%20black Feb 22, 1946, page 5 - The Rhinelander Daily News at Newspapers.com] Moserjames79 (talk) 16:47, 30 April 2025 (UTC)

:::::Wow, great catch. (No pun intended!) Badgeractuary (talk) 17:00, 30 April 2025 (UTC)

:::Just wrote to the Waukesha County Historical Society to try and get some information on Hartland. Judging by their yearbooks, it appears that they were the Beavers until 1951 when they changed to the Trojans (haven't been able to find out why). Moserjames79 (talk) 19:48, 30 April 2025 (UTC)

::::Yes, they will probably get back quicker than the Hartland Library. With Sextonville, depending on how high priority you want to make the changes, there are several pictures online of their basketball teams. If you know anyone good at colorizing old yearbook photos, you could guesstimate color from those. Badgeractuary (talk) 20:18, 30 April 2025 (UTC)

:::I may have found a hint on Sextonville. Referenced in a post from "Graduates of Ithaca High School - Ithaca, WI" https://www.facebook.com/groups/236603392504/search/?q=sextonville

:::One of the commenters has a book on the history of Sextonville High School and posted this about the school newspaper:

:::"I have copies of "The Sextonville Booster" newspaper that was printed by the senior class in 1918 and 1919. They list all the students from first grade through high school in it. It later was changed to the "Blue and Gold News" and had become quite political. One article in the 1919 edition titled "America" was written by Emma Stroschin in her senior year and was about the war with Germany. When I did research on our house, I found that her family lived here at the time and her father was from Germany. She later became Emma Nolan and was the president of the women's auxillary and her picture is on the wall at the American Legion. I was at a fundraiser there a few years ago when I was surprised to see her photo. It was so neat to be able to put a face to the name of someone who had lived in my house so long ago."

:::So, it seems blue and gold is most likely. You had blue and orange, so you were on to something there. Badgeractuary (talk) 13:53, 1 May 2025 (UTC)

::::I made an educated guess on colors based on a photo of the 1940 basketball team (https://content.mpl.org/digital/collection/rchr/id/14356). It looked like it might be blue and orange based on the similarity of color saturation (and their nickname being the Tigers), but this seems more concrete Moserjames79 (talk) 14:01, 1 May 2025 (UTC)

:::::Oh, where did you see Tigers? I missed that altogether.

:::::I think the gold/orange switch was common back then. I saw Argonne listed as both black/orange and black/gold in records, for example. It's probably splitting hairs. Badgeractuary (talk) 14:29, 1 May 2025 (UTC)

::::::Per Ken Theide at the Richland County Historical Society, "Sextonville as best I can track down were the Tigers and closed in 1947 ... there are two different sets of colors and their yearbook/paper provides with title." As for the gold/orange color switch, Fox Lake did it too, I have them down as a lighter orange (the same shade used by the University of Tennessee)Moserjames79 (talk) 14:34, 1 May 2025 (UTC)

:::::::Oh cool thanks! Better than what I got from the other historian there. Badgeractuary (talk) 14:36, 1 May 2025 (UTC)
