Question from Syrianauthor1 (12:25, 4 April 2025)
hello, I have posted an article about a well known News outlet in Syria and it was deleted, could i know what the issue is? --Syrianauthor1 (talk) 12:25, 4 April 2025 (UTC)
:Syrianauthor1, you don't appear to have created any articles on this account. Please tell me the name of the article. — Qwerfjkltalk 11:02, 5 April 2025 (UTC)
::the article called هاشتاغ الإخبارية Syrianauthor1 (talk) 11:04, 5 April 2025 (UTC)
:::Syrianauthor1, I assume you mean :w:ar:هاشتاغ الإخبارية (on the Arabic wiki). I can't help you much with other-language Wikipedia, but the page I linked gives the deletion reason. According to a machine translation, it is because the subject is not notable. If you want further help, you are welcome to ask me, but you will probably get more informed answers if you ask on the Arabic Wikipedia. — Qwerfjkltalk 11:14, 5 April 2025 (UTC)

Updates for editors
- Wikifunctions is now integrated with Dagbani Wikipedia since April 15. It is the first project that will be able to call functions from Wikifunctions and integrate them in articles. A function is something that takes one or more inputs and transforms them into a desired output, such as adding up two numbers, converting miles into metres, calculating how much time has passed since an event, or declining a word into a case. Wikifunctions will allow users to do that through a simple call of a stable and global function, rather than via a local template.
- A new type of lint error has been created: (documentation). The Linter extension's purpose is to identify wikitext patterns that must or can be fixed in pages and provide some guidance about what the problems are with those patterns and how to fix them. Updates for technical contributors
- Following its publication on HuggingFace, the "Structured Contents" dataset, developed by Wikimedia Enterprise, is now also available on Kaggle. This Beta initiative is focused on making Wikimedia data more machine-readable for high-volume reusers. They are releasing this beta version in a location that open dataset communities already use, in order to seek feedback, to help improve the product for a future wider release. You can read more about the overall Structured Contents project, and about the first release that's freely usable.
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Meetings and events
- The Editing and Machine Learning Teams invite interested volunteers to a video meeting to discuss Peacock check, which is the latest Edit check that will detect "peacock" or "overly-promotional" or "non-neutral" language whilst an editor is typing. Editors who work with newcomers, or help to fix this kind of writing, or are interested in how we use artificial intelligence in our projects are encouraged to attend. The meeting will be on April 28, 2025 at 18:00–19:00 UTC and hosted on Zoom.

Hello, I'm somya, I want to publish an article on type foundry --Somyasilcharkhandelwal (talk) 09:45, 23 April 2025 (UTC)
:@Somyasilcharkhandelwal, Welcome! Creating a new article from scratch is extremely challenging, and new editors are strongly recommended to spend a few months learning how Wikipedia works, by making improvements to some of our existing seven million articles before trying it. When you do decide to have a go at a new article, you are highly encouraged to read WP:Your first article. If you haven't already also check out WP:TUTORIAL; it's a lot of fun! Happy editing! — Qwerfjkltalk 15:54, 23 April 2025 (UTC)

Updates for editors
- Event organizers who host collaborative activities on multiple wikis, including Bengali, Japanese, and Korean Wikipedias, will have access to the CampaignEvents extension this week. Also, admins in the Wikipedia where the extension is enabled will automatically be granted the event organizer right soon. They won't have to manually grant themselves the right before they can manage events as requested by a community.

Question from AHPCara (13:45, 3 May 2025)
Hello- I am a newbie and hope to become skilled enough to correctly write biographies of noted aviators. I'm the archivist at an aviation museum. My question is: I have access to a great deal of unpublished military records. For example- Aviators' DD-214, copies of their military award citations and some audio/digital biographical records collected from either the aviator or their family. How do I appropriately use and cite them? I have other questions, but I'll wait to see your first response. Thank you for mentoring me! --AHPCara (talk) 13:45, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
:AHPCara, I'm afraid my knowledge in this area is limited; I suggest you ask at the Teahouse. — Qwerfjkltalk 19:26, 3 May 2025 (UTC)
Question from Mario662629 (21:44, 5 May 2025)
Uhh... I checked my abuse log and saw some edit filters triggered. One of them was a "possible template vandalism" that was simply me trying, but failing to, update a template in a template sandbox, leading to me reverting it. Also, I'm planning to post an article on GDI malwares, and although they are popular on YouTube, there are not many articles on them. I have a draft for now. --Mario662629 (talk) 21:44, 5 May 2025 (UTC)
:Mario662629, so... what is your question? — Qwerfjkltalk 06:53, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
::I'm worried to post my article on GDI malware because of the reasons above. I said that, although they are popular, there are not many articles on them. Here's the link to the draft: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:GDI_malware Mario662629 (talk) 12:02, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
:::Mario662629, you may want to have a look at Wikipedia:Notability (software) and make sure it passes, or else you will be wasting your time on the draft. None of your sources are reliable currently. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:38, 6 May 2025 (UTC)
::::There are not many sources. The only sources I could find for these GDI malwares include:
::::* The wiki page listed in the draft (https://holdon.fandom.com/wiki/GDI_Malware), including the links in that leading to pages for further malwares
::::* The GitHub profiles of the creators and the malwares
::::* The YouTube videos of the malwares
::::Mario662629 (talk) 16:36, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
:::::Mario662629, I am afraid if you cannot find decent sources, you cannot write an article about it. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:55, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
::::::* The article has a notability warning placed on it: notability
::::::* The article has lots of citation needed messages.
::::::* The article was tagged with several WikiProjects tags.
::::::Mario662629 (talk) 17:19, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
::::::Qwerfjkl Please read the reply above to continue helping me about this article; which is specifically being made to get these popular, fan-made malwares to have good descriptions on Google and/or for ChatGPT to give accurate info about them (e.g. trichloromethane.exe was made before ChatGPT's last knowledge update, but it still gives inaccurate info about it). The draft has notices on it and was tagged with several WikiProjects tags. Mario662629 (talk) 14:17, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
:::::::Mario662629, notices are for articles, whereas it is still a draft. I, personally, would suggest abandoning the article unless you can find evidence it is notable. — Qwerfjkltalk 16:48, 8 May 2025 (UTC)

Weekly highlight
- The Wikimedia Foundation has shared the latest draft update to their annual plan for next year (July 2025–June 2026). This includes an executive summary (also on Diff), details about the three main goals (Infrastructure, Volunteer Support, and Effectiveness), global trends, and the budget and financial model. Feedback and questions are welcome on the talk page until the end of May.
Updates for editors
- For wikis that have the CampaignEvents extension enabled, two new feature improvements have been released:
- Admins can now choose which namespaces are permitted for Event Registration via Community Configuration (documentation). The default setup is for event registration to be permitted in the Event namespace, but other namespaces (such as the project namespace or WikiProject namespace) can now be added. With this change, communities like WikiProjects can now more easily use Event Registration for their collaborative activities.
- Editors can now transclude the Collaboration List on a wiki page (documentation). The Collaboration List is an automated list of events and WikiProjects on the wikis, accessed via (example). Now, the Collaboration List can be added to all sorts of wiki pages, such as: a wiki mainpage, a WikiProject page, an affiliate page, an event page, or even a user page.
- File:Octicons-sync.svg View all community-submitted that were resolved last week.
Updates for technical contributors
- Developers who use the
moment
library in gadgets and user scripts should revise their code to use alternatives like theIntl
library or the newmediawiki.DateFormatter
library. Themoment
library has been deprecated and will begin to log messages in the developer console. You can see a global search for current uses, and ask related questions in this Phabricator task. - Developers who maintain a tool that queries the Wikidata term store tables (
wbt_*
) need to update their code to connect to a separate database cluster. These tables are being split into a separate database cluster. Tools that query those tables via the wiki replicas must be adapted to connect to the new cluster instead. Documentation and related links are available. In depth
- The latest Chart Project newsletter is available. It includes updates on preparing to expand the deployment to additional wikis as soon as this week (starting May 6) and scaling up over the following weeks, plus exploring filtering and transforming source data.

- Following an RfC, administrator elections were permanently authorized on a five-month schedule. The next election will be scheduled soon; see Wikipedia talk:Administrator elections for more information. This is an alternate process to the RfA process and does not replace the latter.
- An RfC was closed with consensus to allow editors to opt-out of seeing "sticky decorative elements". Such elements should now be wrapped in sticky decoration wrapper. Editors who wish to opt out can follow the instructions at WP:STICKYDECO.
- An RfC has resulted in a broad prohibition on the use of AI-generated images in articles. A few common-sense exceptions are recognized.

Question from FFRI1684 (13:08, 8 May 2025)
Hey there Mentor :)
I have for years now been irked by edits to the General Nathanael Greene page done 12/22/2018 and finally am able to give some focus to this and figure out how to make proper edits in Wikipedia... Wondering if you have any advice for how to best rectify this slew of one source edits posted on one particular day?
In particular, wondering which would be easier:
(A) Reverting to the pre-12/22/18 version then adding edits made since by others?
OR
(B) Using current version, editing single source footnotes to add better citations?
OR
(C) Some other approach?
Thanks for any advice you can give! --FFRI1684 (talk) 13:08, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
:FFRI1684, there's nothing wrong per se with relying on a single source (particularly if the article had no sources before), but it will tend to a more biased article. I would suggest adding more citations (you don't need to remove the single source, particularly if you can verify it backs up what it's used as reference for). — Qwerfjkltalk 16:45, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
