Specifically, his note that a funny woman was "so rare as to be like ... a dog walking on its hind legs:

This quote is actually borrowed from Boswell's Life of Johnson. Johnson remarks that a dog walking on its hind legs does not do it well but the point is that it's done at all. He makes the same comment later about a woman preaching. I suppose the construction was a commonplace, like many jokes and witticisms, so Hitchens has every right to use it.
