wait so do i need to point something out to the editors now??

and how do we expect the editors to repair the information on the dead page that the link links to (the link on wiki isnt dead per se, but the destination page hasnt been updated since 2008 and every single link on the destination pageis dead or a loopback to the original destination page itself) so im asking how we can reasonably expect wiki editors to fix the outdated nonwiki page that link on the wiki page links to..i feel like we can expect them to fix links on a nonwiki page, so link on the wiki page that links to the nonwiki page full of dead link should maybe be removed? :You are right that the site is better described as "broken" rather than "dead", but we still treat it in the same way. The link does actually go to the database at Rice University, but it does not currently seem to be working properly. There is nothing you need to do right now in this case, it was actually restored and fixed by another editor [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Circular_reporting&diff=next&oldid=1058416116] less than an hour after you deleted the passage.

:As for how to fix these problems, I gave you a link above to a section of Wikipedia:Link rot. That page explains in detail how we can protect against link rot, and how we recover from it when it happens. The immediate action to take if you don't do anything else is to add {{tl|dead link}} after the link. There are a number of places archives of old versions of pages are stored on the internet, the original may have moved to another location, or a completely new source may be found. None of that is likely to happen if you delete the text altogether. You were lucky in this case that someone was watching the page who knew how to fix it and saw you do it. Deleting as a first move is not recommended unless you have good reason to believe the information is wrong, and even then correction with sources is to be preferred to deletion.

: You asked on my talk page how to link to specific edits. We call these "diffs". See Help:Diff for details of how it's done. By the way, splitting a conversation over two pages makes it hard to follow later on. If you are afraid a user may not see your reply you can add {{tl|Talkback|Snarevox}} to their talk page. Note that I have a notice at the top of my talk page asking users not to do this on my page. In common with most regular editors, I watchlist all pages I leave comments on, at least for a while, so I will always see replies.

:i have one more question for you, hopefully you see this. when editing a page via source, how would i edit the main title of the page or the title of a collapsible section? im referring to the much larger font titles that appear in bold. i have been trying to figure it out as ive noticed a few different titular errors, but i havent been able to find a solution yet. you seem like an ideal person to query. :: To change the title of a page you have to move it to a new location. See WP:MOVE. It is often wise to start a discussion on the talk page first before moving. Other editors might disagree. ::: ok im not exactly sure how to link to a collapsible section per se, but i think i can describe one in better detail. for instance, most actor/actress or musical artist pages have the following collapsible sections "early life" "career" "personal life" "filmography" "discography" "legal issues" "see also" ..when they are collapsed, they have like a little sort of down arrow shaped like the letter v and when they are expanded, they have ^ instead of v on the left of the section title. hopefully you know what i mean now. how are those section titles changed/edited? :::: That means you are editing on a mobile device. Sections don't collapse in the desktop view. I still don't understand why you can't edit the headings. If you go into edit mode for the section you want, the heading should be there for you to edit. In visual editor mode it looks like the normal page, in source editing the heading is at the top between double equal signs. You do know how to get into edit mode right? ..i was assuming i couldnt edit those headings for the same reason i see them collapse... because im editing on a mobile device. however, after reading your reply, i went to make sure i wasnt missing anything, and now i see a pencil to get into edit mode next to the section heading and yes the title inside the equals signs..not sure how i missed it before, most likely i was remembering trying to edit a main page title which would affect the url (i believe you said that needs approval) and i was transferring the memory of the lack of ability to edit that as also being unable to change section titles. prettysure i get it now. thanks again. im glad we have this line of communication open. i think i selfishly feel like it my personal wikitech chat app. id be sunk without your experience. or at least maybe irritate alot of people with mistakes. i do appreciate the help! hi sorry to bother you, i just noticed a lock symbol on my edit icon, i hope from our conversation you can tell i was 100% serious about learning how to do a good job. is there anyway i can see why im blocked? it said multiple blocks or strikes maybe against my ip..how can i remedy this? i swear i never did anything bad or wrong intentionally. this really just bugs me. is there anything i can do? if not can you maybe view the reason and let me know what i supposedly did that was so terrible. im sorry for buggin you, i just don't know what to do. : When administrators block IP addresses they have the option to also block any logged in user who is using that IP. This can be done for instance when it is suspected that a user has logged out to do something non-constructive but also has one or more accounts they can also edit from. Sometimes good faith editors get caught in this, but we'll usually unblock right away when it's brought to our attention. The block probably cleared because typically we only block IPs for a few hours unless they are persistently disruptive over a period. :::If you know your IP address you can find the logged-out contributions made from there at Special:Contributions. But if you are editing from a mobile device, the chances are you have a dynamic IP address. That means that your provider gives you a new IP each time you access the internet. Your current IP could have previously been used by any number of other devices connected to the same provider. Basically, you don't need to worry about it if you are editing in good faith. As I said, these kind of blocks are usually very short duration, but if you find yourself the victim of a long-term IP block in the future, see Wikipedia:IP block exemption for how to get your account exempted. hey bud.. just a quick question about using @ to tag users...my name only has one word so @snarevox is easy to do but i saw someone with lets say "jim540 art" as a name...how do i tag him considering the space in his name will @jim540 art take care of it or will that make @jim540 as a tag and leave "art" as plain text?? if its the latter, how do i remedy this so i get his correct username tagged as @jim540 art? ::{{Reply to|SpinningSpark}} ok i figured that out on my own 😊 but when i used the 4 tildes to sign my name at the end, it output my reply which was indented properly and then below the paragraph of my reply, my signature was not indented which also made the font size of the signature bigger. it may have happened because i hit enter before i typed the tildes ti put them on their own line instead of typing them immediately after the end of my reply text. i guess ill figure it out right here, i will add the tildes directly after this sentence without adding a line break.Snarevox (talk) 17:43, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
