Odd question

Why do you change the date formatting in the refs? I've noticed you've done that a few times before, asking because the use mdy dates template should automatically take care of that no? Unless I'm missing something and it doesn't on some platforms? Kung Fu Man (talk) 17:32, 2 March 2025 (UTC)

:My bad, didn't realize the article had that template on it. I just do it through muscle memory I guess. When I go to make any tweaks and see that formatting, it kinda becomes like a visually obvious thing to fix so I just tweak it, I suppose. Soulbust (talk) 17:38, 2 March 2025 (UTC)

::Gotcha. Just to keep you in the loop, compiling Zenyatta's reception, and will likely flesh out Bastion more to B class at least before it goes live. Still trying to keep all the characters for the most part structurally the same.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 19:59, 2 March 2025 (UTC)

:::Since I'm guessing you're reading these, order of operations on my end is to bulk up that I've got out now, then move onto Roadhog, Lifeweaver, and Genji. After those, the possibles are Baptiste, Sojourn, Reaper (Cukie wants to do this one herself), and Sigma in descending order. Juno may also work but her sourcing is kinda light I fear.

:::The remaining ones are likely not happening: Winston and Echo have zilch for commentary unless I've missed something, Torb has a *start* but almost all of it is Valnet and doesn't work, even the Daily Dot list is just a trivia bit. Illari's discussions are strictly about how she doesn't have lore. And Mauga, Venture and Hazard never really seemed to get enough rounded discussion, which is sad because I was hoping there was some cultural conversation about Mauga at least.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 18:32, 4 March 2025 (UTC)

::::Glad to see OW characters get some fleshed out articles and thanks for doing a lot of that work. I recall a year or two ago during AfD discussions others telling me most of them wouldn't be able to sustain their own articles, so definitely nice to see you working on the articles. Haven't had that much energy (or maybe just time) myself to work or start VG-related things in a while, honestly.

::::IIRC, Reaper was one I mentioned to you as one I figured could have his own. Based on how popular he is, I thought there was bound to be sourcing there for him. I'd probably want to assist on that one, as well as Genji's.

::::I think Venture is plausible if there is some discussion there on them being non-binary. But yeah probably understandable that the newer OW2 characters generally don't have much literature/sourcing written about them.

::::Will help out where I can. Soulbust (talk) 18:39, 4 March 2025 (UTC)

:::::Reaper surprisingly is still kinda on the weaker end, but what he has are three full articles for himself, which is not the best but we can easily argue it's viable for size split with the fact they're all clearly sigcov. There's a 4th reference, but it's an unpublished paper that was cited by a published work, so hoping that can squeak through. Cukie Gherkin's really got her heart set on doing that one, so if you want to lend a hand would probably jump in only after it goes live as a formality.

:::::Venture was surprising; there was some commentary about them being nonbinary, but it fizzled fast. I figured there's at least be some *design* commentary but that didn't seem to pop up either. Retrospectives later on may manifest something for them down the road.--Kung Fu Man (talk) 18:45, 4 March 2025 (UTC)

::::::Yeah that's more than alright about Reaper. I figure it will be a situation like Rein or Zen, where I'll just be doing some small edits. And I think so too about Venture. Perhaps the other OW2 characters in general will get some retrospectives that prove useful for making articles about them, but I would probablyyyy bet on Venture as the most likely to attract that. Regarding SI

It seems On SI is a contributor branch, and there's concerns they were using AI: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reliable_sources/Noticeboard#Sports_Illustrated Kung Fu Man (talk) 20:48, 19 March 2025 (UTC)

:That's disheartening for sure. Might have to be assessed for WP:VG/RS where I hope it can at least be tagged as situationally reliable for actual esports articles (I also see pre-2019 seems to be fine for SI in general). I have used ESI and On SI on esports (and traditional sports) articles. I am aware On SI was a spinoff of the main website, but figured it was just for more focused pieces. GOAT

Hi there. Thanks for creating GOAT (sports culture). Editors should refer to some of those philosophical points when placing GOAT claims in bios.

I saw List of sports figures considered the greatest. You may or may not have been aware of the prior deletions at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of ice hockey players considered the greatest of all time and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of association football players considered the greatest of all time. But Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of films considered the best (4th nomination) was a keep (and multiple times). Consider tightening the inclusion criteria. —Bagumba (talk) 10:39, 28 April 2025 (UTC)

:{{ping|Bagumba}} Yeah the list was semi-inspired by the List of films considered the best that you mentioned there. I was unaware of the deletion discussions for the ice hockey and soccer-specific lists though. I've been meaning to expand the broader GOAT athletes list to add context/prose more or less like how the films list is set up, but just have had a mixture of offline responsibilities + other areas on Wikipedia have had my attention during the past month. I know that contextual prose can be added though, so I will be trying to lock in on that soon.

:I think the inclusion criteria is probably fine being set where I've started up the list at (which is including sportswriters' opinions of an athlete being the singular greatest of all time, as opposed to one of. I did start an inclusion criteria/suitability discussion over on the talk page for the main GOAT article, and would definitely appreciate other editors to chime in and add their thoughts about that. Soulbust (talk) 10:54, 28 April 2025 (UTC)

::Ok, I didn't realize it was split, and didn't think to look at that talk page. Actually, a concept page like GOAT (sports culture) might be best to minimalize the WP:EXAMPLEFARM even further. The film page seems to survive because it's limited to prominent surveys, not just a few average Joes (perhaps minority) opinion. Good luck. —Bagumba (talk) 11:07, 28 April 2025 (UTC)

WikiCup 2025 May newsletter

The second round of the 2025 WikiCup ended on 28 April at 23:59 UTC. To reiterate what we said in the previous newsletter, we are no longer disqualifying contestants based on how many points (now known as round points) they received. Instead, the contestants with the highest round-point totals now receive tournament points at the end of each round. These tournament points are carried over between rounds, and can only be earned if a competitor is among the top 16 round-point scorers at the end of each round. This table shows all competitors who have received tournament points so far. Everyone who competed in round 2 will advance to round 3 unless they have withdrawn or been banned.

Round 2 was quite competitive. Four contestants scored more than 1,000 round points, and eight scored more than 500 points (including one who has withdrawn). The following competitors scored at least 800 points:

  • {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16|BeanieFan11}} with 1,233 round points from 24 good articles, 28 Did you know articles, and one In the news nomination, mainly about athletes and politicians
  • {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16|Thebiguglyalien}} with 1,127 round points, almost entirely from two high-multiplier featured articles on Black Widow (Natasha Romanova) and Grace Coolidge, in addition to two GAs and two reviews
  • {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16|History6042}} with 1,088 round points from four featured lists about Michelin-starred restaurants, nine good articles and a good topic mostly on Olympic-related subjects, seven ITN articles, and dozens of reviews
  • {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16|Gog the Mild}} with 1,085 round points from three FAs, one GA, and four DYKs on military history, as well as 18 reviews
  • {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16|Arconning}} with 887 round points, mostly from four FLs, six GAs, and seven DYKs on Olympic topics, along with more than two dozen reviews

In addition, we would like to recognize {{Wikipedia:WikiCup/Participant16|Generalissima}} for her efforts; she scored 801 round points but withdrew before the end of the round.

The full scores for round 2 can be seen here. During this round, contestants have claimed 13 featured articles, 20 featured lists, 4 featured-topic articles, 138 good articles, 7 good-topic articles, and more than 100 Did You Know articles. In addition, competitors have worked on 19 In the News articles, and they have conducted nearly 300 reviews.

Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed in Round 3. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 01:03, 29 April 2025 (UTC)
