Hi Streona, and thanks for the message. Looking at that site, they are definitely using the Wiki software, which is freely available for anyone who wants it. This availability, and frustration with Wikipedia's rules on what does/doesn't belong in an encyclopedia, has led to people setting up hundreds of independent Wikis, many of them hosted on the same server (Wikia) but all of them separate from Wikipedia (some of the best known are Wookieepedia (the Star Wars wiki) and the World of Warcraft Wiki). This means the Cunnan Wiki is completely unrelated to Wikipedia; it just happens to use the same software - it was very good of you to correct the articles there, and hopefully it's appreciated, but obviously we have no oversight there.

As far as content goes, all Wikipedia articles are freely available for anyone to do anything they want with, including copy/change/try to sell/whatever. The only real restrictions are that any derivative work must be released under a similar free license to Wikipedia, and we must be credited somewhere. If the Cunnan site has used Wikipedia articles, or portions of them, they must give attribution somewhere on the site (usually a mention on each page that "this site contains material from Wikipedia..." is sufficient). If not, we can follow this up further as they would be in breach of copyright. Stuff that you've added to their site is licensed under their rules, so that wouldn't be covered. However, I think your note was more concerned with accuracy than plagarism - as I said, we have no say in how they run their Wiki, but from your message it's easy to see why they'd want to host their own stuff rather than fight through Wikipedia policies on accuracy and verification to get it on here ;)

From their ranks of up to 55 councillors the BNP have lost a substantial proportion through resignations expulsions and splits. The BNP councillors have particular disadvantages which many other councillors do not have. Instances of various misdemeanours are closely watched by opponents and widely advertised- although all councillors will face scrutiny from opposing parties locally. When the first BNP councillor, Derek Beackon was elected in the Isle of Dogs, local council staff staged a mass walkout. He found himself isolated from officers and councillors, most of whom refused to speak to him at all, making it especially difficult to understand the workings of the council and impaired his effectiveness. Others have had similar experiences, which has often resulted in exceptionally poor attendance records and disillusionment. Some have been obstructed by official actions against them and been prevented from fulfilling their dutues by suspension or by bail conditions. However as the party increases its pool of experienced councillors this could be improved from their point of view, although the actions of existing councillors have not produced any positive role models as yet.

The internal party democracy of the BNP has been criticised by members for giving too much power to the Chairman and for not being widely available for the membership to consult. Others, such as Daniel Kelly in Barking & Dagenham or Angela Clarke in Keighley, have resigned due to "not understanding what was going on" . Some have been suspended from the council. Luke Smith (a Burnley councillor) was expelled for glassing another BNP reveller at the 2003 Red. White And Blue Festival and was banned from being a councillor by the Standards Board for England, following his being banned from football matches for hooliganism. (Luke Smith later hanged himself in 2008).

Answering these charges, BNP loyalists have suggested that she is a "witch" (although this was unsubstantiated).

As the BNP has yet to gain power in any locality, it has not yet had the opportunity to show its policies in action. However any policy explicitly based on treating ethnic minorities less favourably would have to comply with national legislation designed to prevent such policies, which would constrain the freedom of action of such a council.

The BNP has a track record of thrying to suppress manifestations of Islam. It does not mention this specifically in its manifesto, but it endoeses a book by one of its members entitled "Jihad- Islam's 13oo year war against the West" the final chapter of which propese the "hard choices" to be made to save Western Christian Civilsation. Unfortunately I am not privy to precisely what that might be, but I think we know who it will be hard for. Fellow European fascists- such as the Danish People's Party- advocate a total ban on Islam altoopgether.

Simone Clarke is a principal ballerina at the English National Ballet and a deputy for the entertainer's union Equity. Opponents of the Independent Trade Union Solidairit have falsely claimed that it was 'racist'. This is despite the fact that their very Constitution makes it clear that it is open to all regardless of political opinion, ethnicity or faith. The Union (supported by Third Way) stands for freedom and for the rights of all British Workers. This month they welcomed thier first Sikh member. Pramjit Sadra explained his reasons for joining Solidarity:-

"I have been aware of the shift of work away from ordinary British people which I feel undermines our communities. The shift toward cheap migrant workers and off-shoring, if allowed to continue will totally change this Nation. The effects have already been felt by many in the UK losing work to cheaper labour or suppressing wages, which does not just affect one individual but their immediate family and children, extended family and the communities they have long been part of.

We are at best an overcrowded Nation that cannot sustain the influx of many Nationalities without the infrastructure to employ, house and integrate into our communities. Furthermore there is no recognition of the impact of importing cultures, including those with a violent/aggressive way of life, upon settled communities."

BNP members have suffered various difficulties in employment.

In the case of ASLEF v. United Kingdom the European Court of Human Rights overturned an employment appeal tribunal finding, awarding a BNP train driver damages for expulsion. It found that the union were entitled to do so, and that this was not a breach of the European Convention on Human Rights.

In the case of Baggs v. Fudge (2005)UKET, Robert Baggs, represented by he BNP legal officer, Lee Barnes, claimed that he had been discriminated against on the grounds of "religion, or similar philosophical belief" (contrary to the Employment (Religious Discrimination) Regulations 2003, when applying for a job at a G.P. surgery. The Employment Tribunal found that membership of the BNP was not a "similar" belief, and the case was rejected.

Advice from Stuart Chamberlain of Gee Consult, management consultants has been that a similar case might be successful since the removal of the qualification "similar" from philosophical belief by an amendment in 2007. -"Cases concerning claims made by British National Party’s (BNP) members that their fascist beliefs were similar to religious beliefs have previously been decided in favour of the employer or potential employer. However, under the new law, a strong argument could be made to the contrary."

However, this has not been tested and there is a clause in the regulations which provide that the beliefs of employees may be required to be in line with the "ethos" of the organisation.

Mr.Redfearn was a bus driver whose BNP membership was unknown to his employers, Serco, until he was elected as a councillor. He was sacked as the employers were concerned that he might endanger their contract with a local authotity to transport vulnerable people from a day centre of various ethnicities. The decision in Redfearn v.Serco (2006 CA) is summarised thus;

"where an employee who is a member of a racist group (in this case the BNP political party) is dismissed because of the danger that his continuing employment might lead to violence in the workplace, the dismissal can properly be regarded as being for legitimate health and safety reasons and will not be unlawful race discrimination."

Re ASLEF case, the Court's judgement merely says "The applicant was represented by Thompsons, solicitors practising in London". I could not find an online copy of the Court of Appeal judgement of Lord Justice Mummery Redfearn V. Serco (2006) IRLR 623, but it is quoted in a briefing paper by John Hendy QC and Michael Ford on ASLEF v. United Kingdom thus

"... the dismissal of Mr.Redfearn was not on racial grounds but because the former employer...wished to avoid the perceived deterimental effects of Mr.Redfearn's membership of, and election to office representing thje BNP, which propagated racially discriminatory policies concerning non-white races who form part of (the employer's)workforce and customer base..."

This is the definition of racism, so in reply to h2g2Bob's request for a source from higher up the legal hierarchy than a tribunal - here it is. Barnes (one of the 3 members of the "ethnic laison committee" of which onlt Rustem can claim to be "ethnic"- the other being Colin Smith)self desribed the BNP as whites only.

I cannot say that Barnes self- described them as racist, but Mummery LJ in his judgement holds that they are.

Also of note from Hendy's article was a quote from British Nationalist 2003 encouraging BNP members to try to join trade unions in order to get thrown out and claim "five figure damages" and to get on the "gravy-train" before the "lefties" got too scared to expel them. I reverted your recent edit about immigrants on boats, for two reasons. I'd considered adding the material myself but do not consider the story to have 'played out' yet sufficiently enough to make a worthwhile addition, and secondly because the article is presently at WP:GAN and your reference formatting was inconsistent with that used in the rest of the article.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission took an action against the BNP regarding provisions in its constitution to limit eligibilty for membership to "whites only", defined as members of the Anglo-Saxon and Celtic "Folk Communities". The original hearing before Judge Paul Collins in the Central London County Court on 2 September 2009 was adjourned due to the BNP failure to instruct counsel, resulting in the BNP being required to pay eighty thousand pounds in costs. BNP representatives claimed that among the intentions of the EHRC was to bankrupt the party by legal costs. Griffin then circulated membership to explain that that they would be conceding the case since it could cost upto a million pounds to take it to the House of Lords. On 15 October 2009 the BNP agreed before Judge Collins to suspend further membership applications until an Extraordinary General Meeting in January 2010 confirming the changes to the constitution to comply with legal requirements. The case has been further adjourned until 28 January 2010 in ored to ensure compliance.

Hi, Streona. I was directed to your fascinating article by an Australian Morey with several generations of Isle-of-Wight family history. I've also visited the island recently myself, and used one of my photos in an update of the Quarr Abbey article. While copy-editing (which I hope you'll check over), I found that the Michal Morey piece was surprisingly lacking in authoritative inline sources , though there must be plenty of book references in libraries. The website refs are interesting but not 'official' or historiographically 'reliable' enough for Wikipedia. Do you have the book For Rooks and Ravens? That looks to be the best one referred to in the article. It would be very helpful to have a few inline references to the book instead of only websites, don't you think?
