Introduction to contentious topics

{{ivmbox | image = Commons-emblem-notice.svg |imagesize=50px | bg = #E5F8FF | text = You have recently edited a page related to the Arab–Israeli conflict, a topic designated as contentious. This is a brief introduction to contentious topics and does not imply that there are any issues with your editing.

A special set of rules applies to certain topic areas, which are referred to as contentious topics. These are specially designated topics that tend to attract more persistent disruptive editing than the rest of the project and have been designated as contentious topics by the Arbitration Committee. When editing a contentious topic, Wikipedia’s norms and policies are more strictly enforced, and Wikipedia administrators have an expanded level of powers and discretion in order to reduce disruption to the project.

Within contentious topics, editors should edit carefully and constructively, refrain from disrupting the encyclopedia, and:

Additionally, you must be logged-in, have 500 edits and an account age of 30 days, and are not allowed to make more than 1 revert within 24 hours on any page within this topic.

Editors are advised to err on the side of caution if unsure whether making a particular edit is consistent with these expectations. If you have any questions about contentious topics procedures, you may ask them at the arbitration clerks' noticeboard or you may learn more about this contentious topic here. You may also choose to note which contentious topics you know about by using the {{tl|Ctopics/aware}} template. —Cryptic 02:31, 21 March 2025 (UTC)

Inappropriate removals on the current event pages

You are removing information from news items even though they come directly from the sources, sometimes giving spurious reasons for doing so and at other times giving no reason at all. Stop this, please [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Portal:Current_events/2025_April_30&diff=prev&oldid=1288109105] [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Portal:Current_events/2025_April_30&diff=prev&oldid=1288201503] Crwd-ppu (talk) 05:30, 1 May 2025 (UTC)

:I apologize if my actions were not explained properly. I've added compromise wording to remove the unconfirmed accusations while still keeping the point about China's influence by including China's reaction. XYZ1233212 (talk) 05:52, 1 May 2025 (UTC)

::As an addition to my first comment, I have noticed a very disturbing pattern where you are only and systematically removing news items which documents casualty incidents in the United States and dismissing them as "not particularly impactful" or "routine". [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Portal:Current_events/2025_April_29&diff=prev&oldid=1288055795] [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Portal:Current_events/2025_April_24&diff=prev&oldid=1287257080] [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Portal:Current_events/2025_April_26&diff=prev&oldid=1287598805] In one instance, you removed a news item which documented a mass casualty event. [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Portal:Current_events/2025_April_27&diff=prev&oldid=1287737258] We are not going to be minimizing injuries and deaths just because it is happening in a certain part of the world, that is discrimination bordering on racism.

::As for your wording, it is no compromise at all as you have simply restored your preferred wording word-for-word. The "unconfirmed accusations" you refer to does not make sense as that part of the news item is just describing what is being reported in the sources. From Reuters: In a statement late on Tuesday, Taiwan's foreign ministry said the Somalia Civil Aviation Authority had last week issued a notice that as of Wednesday Taiwanese passports will not be accepted for entry to Somalia. "The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has lodged a solemn protest against the Somali government's move, instigated by China, to restrict the freedom and security of travel of our nationals, and demands the Somali government immediately revoke the announcement," it said. Crwd-ppu (talk) 06:11, 1 May 2025 (UTC)

:::As a compromise, we can add China's reaction, but only on the condition that everything else that was written in relation to Taiwan be kept. (the part about lodging a protest and the instigation of the ban) Crwd-ppu (talk) 06:22, 1 May 2025 (UTC)

::::I don't agree with this. As we are required to follow inclusion guidelines and should not delete each other's additions repeatedly, I've removed all content related to this matter added by both of us and have opened a discussion [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal_talk:Current_events/2025_April_30#c-XYZ1233212-20250501064500-Taiwan_&_Somalia] on the relevant discussion page for the page for input by other editors to reach a consensus. We may re-add content agreed upon by other editors once the discussion is completed. XYZ1233212 (talk) 06:47, 1 May 2025 (UTC)

:::I've also opened a discussion of your reversions here [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal_talk:Current_events#c-XYZ1233212-20250501073900-Recent_Additions_to_Disasters_Section] XYZ1233212 (talk) 07:40, 1 May 2025 (UTC)

::::I wanted to let you know that going through my edits and reverting those not related to our initial dispute was a violation of policy [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:HOUND&redirect=no]. I also wanted to make it clear that your initial accusation of "racism" was unfounded and not a legitimate reason to make the removals. Please stop these actions and settle our disputes in the relevant conversations, in line with what policy requires of us. XYZ1233212 (talk) 04:11, 2 May 2025 (UTC)

:::::I'm not going to get into this accusation that I've been harassing you; needless to say, not only is that something I disagree with, I also find it ironic given your pattern of biased editing; I described it as discriminatory (not racist as you allege) which really isn't something you can dispute since your edit history shows you were only removing news items which documented casualty incidents in the United States.

:::::As for the disagreement over the content itself [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Portal:Current_events/2025_April_30&diff=prev&oldid=1288097953], given your habit of citing rules and regulations, you would have been aware that you shouldn't have undone my revert of your deletion of the news item as that did not adhere to the guidelines. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:BOLD,_revert,_discuss_cycle#Process] I have notified the editor who wrote the item of what is going on here since, in addition to seeing if an expedited resolution can be found for this disagreement with their help, they have a right to know that their contributions are being removed on spurious grounds. But if for whatever reason they do not participate and I choose to revert your deletion of the news item again, I will ask that you adhere to the guidelines and not undo the change until and unless that is what has been explicitly agreed to in the discussions. Crwd-ppu (talk) 11:00, 2 May 2025 (UTC)

::::::Since that reversion is illegitimate and stems from your pattern of harassment, I don't think the policy you cited applies. XYZ1233212 (talk) 11:06, 2 May 2025 (UTC)

:::::::We are not going to be picking and choosing when we want policies and guidelines to apply just because it gives us a result that we don't like, that is inconsistency bordering on duplicity. You say "we are required to follow inclusion guidelines and should not delete each other's additions" and I have done that by not changing the interim compromise wording which you have proposed (with no prior consultation with me over its formulation) for the Taiwan-Somaliland news item even though it obviously is not the wording I prefer, so I will expect you to show the same level of restraint when it comes to the implementation of my compromise proposals. Crwd-ppu (talk) 12:22, 2 May 2025 (UTC)

:As more than a day has passed and no one has commented on our content dispute, with the tone in our discussions steadily deteriorating, I no longer feel comfortable participating anymore. I'm withdrawing my objections and have restored the content with the sections you originally included. I've deleted the part on the travel advisory I added previously, to trim down on the entry.
