RAMESH NATH PANDEY
Political career: Ramesh Nath Pandey (b. 1944) is a Nepali politician and author. He was foreign minister in 2005-06 during the royal regime. He was also minister of state for tourism, labour and social welfare (1986), minister for industry and communication (1990), minister for environment and population (1999), minister for general administration, communications and broadcasting (2002). He was member of parliament for over 20 years under the Panchayat and 1990 Constitutions. Pandey started his career as a journalist. He founded the popular vernacular ‘Naya Sandesh’ weekly and ‘New Herald’ English daily in 1962 and was imprisoned several times by the Panchayat system for writing critical to the establishment.
Other roles and achievements: He was Patron of the historic Nepal-China-Japan joint Mt. Everest Expedition in 1987. He was member of the Nepali delegations to the UN General Assembly in 1968 and in 1986. He was leader of the Nepalese delegation to the UN World Summit which took place on Sep. 14-16, 2005. In recognition of his contributions to Nepal–Japan relations, he was awarded the Order of the Grand Cordon of the Rising Sun by the Government of Japan in November 2020.
Writings:
He is author of two books ‘Kutniti ra Rajneeti’ (Diplomacy and Politics) and ‘Kranti ra Pratikranti’ (Revolution and Counter-Revolution) published in 2015 and 2021 respectively. These works reflect on Nepal’s political history and foreign policy.
Personal life:
Ramesh Nath Pandey is married and has two sons.
