Ryan Holiday article rollback

Hi {{u|Drmies}} —

A quick note about yesterday’s full reversion of Ryan Holiday to the 24 April version. The rollback removed several MOS-cleanups and sourcing fixes added in good faith by me. I’ve opened a short section at Talk:Ryan Holiday#Request to restore constructive edits and build consensus outlining why those edits improve compliance with WP:MOS, WP:NPOV, and WP:PRESERVE.

Would you mind taking a look and sharing your view? Even a brief comment on whether selective tweaks (rather than a blanket revert) would be the better BRD “discuss” step would help move things forward.

Thanks for your time—and for all the copy-patrol work you do. ~ @IndyNotes IndyNotes (talk) 18:23, 29 April 2025 (UTC)

Very wide rangeblock

Hi Drmies,

{{IP|2600:1000:0:0:0:0:0:0/21}} is the range for literally all of Verizon Wireless's network in the US. You can see that the disruption was mostly confined to {{IP|2600:1017:B800:0:0:0:0:0/40}}. Thanks, CutlassCiera 20:13, 1 May 2025 (UTC)

  • That's what I meant to block--don't know what happened. I'm on it. Drmies (talk) 21:45, 1 May 2025 (UTC)
  • User:zzuuzz, please help me out here: when I click on the log I can't even change the block I inadvertently made. I'm hoping you have the magic power to change it to--well whatever you see fit. My range calculator (look at User:Drmies/IP range) said /40 and that is what I was trying to do. Thanks! Drmies (talk) 21:46, 1 May 2025 (UTC)
  • I've unblocked the /21, not sure what you tried :) Guessing here - don't look at the range contribs - either look at an individual IP in the range, or look at your blocking log, and look for the unblock link. -- zzuuzz (talk) 21:51, 1 May 2025 (UTC)
  • Thanks {{U|Zzuuzz}}--well I tried blocking the /40, just copied the range from that calculator, but when I click on the log/contributions for that range it says "Unable to show results...", so I couldn't even unblock. So thank you. Hey, I see what you're doing in Cairo, and I appreciate it. I thought, for a short while, we were done with that one. Has it been a year? Drmies (talk) 21:54, 1 May 2025 (UTC)
  • You should be able to get to the /40, just not anything larger than /32, so again I dunno. I should FYI ping {{ping|Joyous!|Rsjaffe}}, since we've unsettled the previous partial block. I'm not a fan of /21 blocks, and especially with the reason of 'vandalism-only account', so I'm gonna pass on that. I'm also gonna pass on the /40. Oh and here's a tip, use {{rangevandal}}: {{rangevandal|2600:1017:B800::/40}} and {{rangevandal|2600:1000::/21}}. -- zzuuzz (talk) 22:08, 1 May 2025 (UTC)
  • Oh, I was never going to block /21 (and I still don't understand how that happened--if I can't even see their contributions, how could I have blocked them?), and I guess I can leave /40 alone for now--perhaps the two /64 blocks are good enough. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 22:25, 1 May 2025 (UTC)
  • :I've restored the partial blocks on the /21 range, but after reading over this conversation again, I'm going to unblock the /21 and we'll just have to selectively respond to whatever shows up again. — rsjaffe 🗣️ 22:40, 1 May 2025 (UTC)

Russian Gagarin vandal

Note that this isn't MAB, this is a Russian user who has a fixation on every linked page to Yuri Gagarin. Not sure what the underlying motive is, but this explains their targeted articles. CutlassCiera 13:19, 2 May 2025 (UTC)

  • Are you sure? Drmies (talk) 13:22, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
  • Yeah. You can tell because the statements originally from MAB are copy-and-pasted from their original source, as the last couple IPs left the signature of the MAB IP that left it in. The IPs that aren't proxies are all geolocating to Russia, and it wouldn't make sense for MAB to spam "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" on random Soviet cosmonauts, which was how the vandalism originally started. I think this is just a case of someone having a large number of proxies at their disposal and trying to cause as much havoc (trying to waste admins' time with revdels) as possible. CutlassCiera 13:25, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
  • User:Cutlass, it seems you know more about technical aspects than me, and you've been chasing this jerk around for a few days, I think. Would you mind posting something on WP:AN, with your suspicions and maybe some advice for editors and admins? And I am interested in others looking at the matter, and their opinion on whether this is MAB or not. We need a filter manager too; I emailed the list but haven't heard back. Thanks so much, Drmies (talk) 16:18, 2 May 2025 (UTC)
  • Done, and thanks for your efforts in combating this! CutlassCiera 19:29, 2 May 2025 (UTC)

Yara Naoum's Court Case

You have deleted Yara Naoum's trial. I added this not only to explain her character, but also to show the fault lines in Egyptian society, between rich and poor and modern and conservative. It is also part of the original Arabic article. If she wanted to sue Wikipedia, she would probably do so on the basis of the Arabic version. Umardafaqussamk (talk) 05:00, 3 May 2025 (UTC)

  • What's on the Egyptian wiki is irrelevant. If you think that "someone hasn't sued us yet so we're okay" is an argument for keeping content in, you got another thing coming. Drmies (talk) 12:35, 3 May 2025 (UTC)

  • Following an RfC, administrator elections were permanently authorized on a five-month schedule. The next election will be scheduled soon; see Wikipedia talk:Administrator elections for more information. This is an alternate process to the RfA process and does not replace the latter.
  • An RfC was closed with consensus to allow editors to opt-out of seeing "sticky decorative elements". Such elements should now be wrapped in {{t|sticky decoration wrapper}}. Editors who wish to opt out can follow the instructions at WP:STICKYDECO.
  • An RfC has resulted in a broad prohibition on the use of AI-generated images in articles. A few common-sense exceptions are recognized.

Clearly a handful here, incompetent IP keeps "contributing" while making a mess of the article (i.e. they say the name of the Moroccan league is "Botola Pro" but WP calls it Botola, so there!). Preventing vandalism

Hi Drmies,

A vandal from Russia ( User:V1adis1av ) deleted section "The physical essence of the Stoney length and the Planck length" from article Stoney units; I fixed it.

I want to ask what to do, because he does the same thing in Russian Wikipedia.

-- Aab64 (talk) 18:05, 11 May 2025 (UTC)

  • What you should probably do is [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Stoney_units&diff=prev&oldid=1289922355 look at this edit summary] and follow the link, or read the document that User:Jähmefyysikko helpfully linked on your talk page. Drmies (talk) 20:02, 11 May 2025 (UTC)

Matthew Drummond

Hi Drmies. I've been tracking User:Matthew John Drummond for a little while. I have WP:CIR concerns about this user, who appear to be quite young and has struggled significantly to understand how Wikipedia works. They have been putting some serious WP:BLP violations into Draft:Matthew Drummond - that draft is another one that entirely unsuitable for Wikipedia, in my opinion, and potentially should be deleted under BLP. Opolito (talk) 18:02, 12 May 2025 (UTC)

  • Thanks. Well, given the alleged age I don't think that's a valid reason for deletion--unfortunately, perhaps. Perhaps others disagree. But I share your CIR concerns and this morning I was thinking that indeed maybe we should put a stop to it. Drmies (talk) 21:14, 12 May 2025 (UTC)
  • {{U|Opolito}}, a number of their drafts were accepted. I'm looking at a few of them and I'm not impressed. Please look over some and tell me what you think. Drmies (talk) 21:17, 12 May 2025 (UTC)

::Thanks. I'm taking a look at some of the earlier created articles. The first one I looked at is Kitty Clive (TV play) which had a number of references which were either missing or about a different subject. Once I'd cleaned it up, the two remaining sources are extremely trivial mentions, indeed so trivial I can verify that they are even about the TV play itself. I've PRODed that article. It should never have been moved from Draft into mainspace in my opinion. I'll look at others. Opolito (talk) 21:53, 12 May 2025 (UTC)

::On the other hand The Ten Commandments (1971 TV series) is probably okay - I can find meaningful reviews of this series in British newspapers, so it does pass WP:GNG even if the article itself needs cleanup. Similarly Marie Stopes: Sexual Revolutionary does need work, but there is significant coverage of this one in the press, so it can meet WP:GNG. In both these cases Drummond has badly messed up the sourcing and a lot of what is written there is not encyclopedic. Despite these being notable enough to be covered by articles, they don't assuage my concerns about CIR. Opolito (talk) 22:09, 12 May 2025 (UTC)

Hi there longtime fellow user, all well?

This is seriously getting out of hand, so i ask if you could please protect this page should you see fit. The reasonings now: i have browsed the internet extensively (both in English and in Portuguese, he's Qatari born in my country), found NOTHING regarding that supposed 100th cap (i supposed it would have been all over the place no?). The RSSSF source found in article (this one https://www.rsssf.org/miscellaneous/qat-pedro-intl.html) seems to contain (i asked at WP:FOOTY, they told me this there) even CLUB friendlies!!

Here, some more Google search for you, in English (https://www.google.com/search?q=pedro+correia+100+caps+qatar&sca_esv=4991a7ad233a5427&rlz=1C1GCEU_pt-PTPT1160PT1160&sxsrf=AHTn8zoqlpPYgyHkYOTQHO4XHUZLjINv9g%3A1747258315866&ei=ywslaM7VNOGmkdUPsPyZiA0&ved=0ahUKEwiO5_259KONAxVhU6QEHTB-BtEQ4dUDCBA&uact=5&oq=pedro+correia+100+caps+qatar&gs_lp=Egxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAiHHBlZHJvIGNvcnJlaWEgMTAwIGNhcHMgcWF0YXIyCBAhGKABGMMESKUZUPMEWNYXcAF4AZABAJgBqwGgAeUFqgEDMS41uAEDyAEA-AEBmAIHoAKuBsICChAAGLADGNYEGEfCAgQQIxgnwgIFEAAY7wXCAggQABiABBiiBJgDAIgGAZAGApIHAzIuNaAHkhOyBwMxLjW4B6MG&sclient=gws-wiz-serp) and in Portuguese (https://www.google.com/search?q=r%C3%B3-r%C3%B3+100+internacionaliza%C3%A7%C3%B5es+qatar&sca_esv=4991a7ad233a5427&rlz=1C1GCEU_pt-PTPT1160PT1160&sxsrf=AHTn8zoraOAuQtlNcVaeyQqt-JPtP_s_0w%3A1747258328458&ei=2AslaNndG4aIkdUP_PaF8AQ&ved=0ahUKEwjZqf6_9KONAxUGRKQEHXx7AU4Q4dUDCBA&uact=5&oq=r%C3%B3-r%C3%B3+100+internacionaliza%C3%A7%C3%B5es+qatar&gs_lp=Egxnd3Mtd2l6LXNlcnAiKHLDsy1yw7MgMTAwIGludGVybmFjaW9uYWxpemHDp8O1ZXMgcWF0YXIyChAhGKABGMMEGApIwEZQAFiDRnAAeACQAQGYAaABoAHHGKoBBDguMjC4AQPIAQD4AQGYAhagAu4TwgIFEAAY7wXCAggQABiABBiiBMICCBAhGKABGMMEmAMAkgcENC4xOKAHwGayBwQ0LjE4uAfuEw&sclient=gws-wiz-serp).

This has been going on since March 2024, and i am 100% sure it's the same person doing this (ALL the addresses are from Germany). In this case, for the sake of keeping their preferred version, they even reverted the correct update had i made of club appearances in the infobox (and now i made another one)!

Please tell me what you think, attentively RevampedEditor (talk) 21:39, 14 May 2025 (UTC)

  • This "just in": i wrote 99 caps in his box on 25 March (match against North Korea), per the NFT.com external link. I now see he appeared against Kyrgyzstan five days later, and said site now shows 100 int'l appearances; reinstated the "FIFA Men's Century Club" category the IP inserted/keeps inserting, as you see i'm trying to reach a compromise in the article, but i know the other party will have none of that!

Funny that the internet (continues to) mention(s) nothing about such a milestone, heck not even the Qatar Football Association utters a word on the matter (see https://www.qfa.qa/kyrgyzstan-stuns-qatar-in-world-cup-qualifier/)! --RevampedEditor (talk) 22:26, 14 May 2025 (UTC)

Question

In the black comedy article, why’d you remove the black comedy in films? Jopling horse (talk) 21:03, 16 May 2025 (UTC)

  • I explained that in my edit summary. Drmies (talk) 22:06, 16 May 2025 (UTC)

Timetable

It may be until sometime Monday until I can work up a list of the POV issues with that article. Will that suffice? I don't want to just slap something together here. Rja13ww33 (talk) 00:19, 17 May 2025 (UTC)

  • I don't need a program, really--if you can list three items that are problematic, or explain in two sentences what in general the issue is, that should suffice. But you need to be clear to other editors too, because I couldn't follow what you were trying to say--I have no inside knowledge on this topic. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 01:04, 17 May 2025 (UTC)
  • Understood. But I do want to be complete here. Just 3 items or two sentences I don't think will cut it. (But tell me if I am wrong.) Regards. Rja13ww33 (talk) 01:07, 17 May 2025 (UTC)
  • You don't have to lay out everything in an opening post. A summary of the important issues will do; the rest can come during discussion, because honestly, I can't see it. Is the POV on the side of the believers of the myth, or on the other side? The article seemed decent enough to me, except for the language--especially the part I cut. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 02:51, 17 May 2025 (UTC)
  • :Ok, let me think about what I want to do here (and how I want to say it). Rja13ww33 (talk) 03:18, 17 May 2025 (UTC)
