VMware Fusion is a software hypervisor developed by VMware for macOS systems. It allows Macs with Intel or Apple M series CPUs to run virtual machines with guest operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows, Linux, or macOS, within the host macOS operating system.

Overview

VMware Fusion can virtualize a multitude of operating systems,{{cite web |url=https://www.vmware.com/products/fusion.html |title=Fusion – Run Windows on Mac |website=www.vmware.com |access-date=2020-07-30}} including many older versions of macOS, which allows users to run older Mac software that can no longer be run under the current version of macOS, such as 32-bit{{cite web |last=Mendelson |first=Edward |title=How to Run 32-Bit Apps in macOS Catalina |url=https://au.pcmag.com/vmware-fusion-8-for-mac/63913/how-to-run-32-bit-apps-in-macos-catalina |website=PC Magazine |date=2019-10-12 |access-date=2020-07-30}} and PowerPC applications.{{cite web |last=Snell |first=Jason |title=VMware Fusion update lets users virtualize Leopard, Snow Leopard |url=https://www.macworld.com/article/1163755/vmware-fusion-update-lets-users-virtualize-leopard-snow-leopard.html |website=Macworld |date=2011-11-18 |access-date=2020-07-30}}

VMware Fusion, which uses a combination of paravirtualization and hardware virtualization made possible by the Mac transition to Intel processors in 2006, marked VMware's first entry into Macintosh-based x86 virtualization.{{cite journal |last=Griffiths |first=Rob |date=May 2007 |title=VMWare: New kid on the block |journal=Macworld Australia |issue=112 |pages=36–37 |url=https://www.macworld.com/article/1057377/windows_vmware.html}} VMware Fusion uses Intel VT present in the Intel Core microarchitecture platform.{{cite web |url=https://pubs.vmware.com/fusion-5/topic/com.vmware.fusion.help.doc/GUID-067B9FB1-8E21-4BAC-B394-93DECCC06F3C.html |title=Change the Preferred Virtualization Engine |website=pubs.vmware.com |access-date=2020-07-30}} Much of the underlying technology in VMware Fusion is inherited from other VMware products, such as VMware Workstation, allowing VMware Fusion to offer features such as 64-bit and SMP support.{{cite web |url=https://pubs.vmware.com/fusion-4/topic/com.vmware.fusion.help.doc/GUID-F4C352A0-16AA-476F-BE34-1FF2C5399DA4.html |title=VMware Fusion Capabilities |website=pubs.vmware.com |access-date=2020-07-30}} VMware Fusion 1.0 was released on August 6, 2007, exactly one year after being announced.{{cite web |last=Cohen |first=Peter |title=WWDC: VMware brings virtual machines to Mac OS X |url=https://www.macworld.com/article/1052227/vmware.html |publisher=PCWorld |date=2006-08-06 |access-date=2020-07-30}}

Along with the Mac transition to Apple silicon in 2020, VMware announced plans for Fusion to support the new M-series platform and ARM architecture, releasing a tech preview for M1 chips in September 2021.{{Cite web |last=Roy |first=Michael |date=September 22, 2021 |title=Announcement: VMware Fusion for Apple silicon Public Tech Preview Now Available |url=https://blogs.vmware.com/teamfusion/2021/09/fusion-for-m1-public-tech-preview-now-available.html |website=VMware Fusion Blog}} In November 2022, VMware Fusion 13 was released, allowing ARM virtualization on Apple Silicon chips. Coinciding with the release, VMware implemented support for TPM 2.0 and OpenGL 4.3, along with improvements to VMware Tools on Windows 11. VMware Fusion 13 retains support for Intel Macs, distributing the software as a universal binary.{{Cite web |last=Roy |first=Michael |date=November 17, 2022 |title=Fusion 13 Pro and Player Are Here! |url=https://blogs.vmware.com/teamfusion/2022/11/fusion-13-pro-and-player-are-here.html |website=VMware Fusion Blog}}

On May 13, 2024, it was announced that VMware Fusion Pro would become free for personal use. Previously VMware Fusion (not Pro) was free for personal use; this edition would be discontinued, effectively replaced by the Pro edition. At the same time, commercial use would switch to an annual subscription, removing the option to buy a one-off perpetual license.{{Cite web |last=Roy |first=Michael |date=May 13, 2024 |title=VMware Fusion Pro: Now Available Free for Personal Use |url=https://blogs.vmware.com/teamfusion/2024/05/fusion-pro-now-available-free-for-personal-use.html |access-date=May 14, 2024 |website=VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) Blog}}

In November 2024, this change was expanded to include commercial and educational users, thereby making the software free for everyone. At the same time, however, Broadcom discontinued official technical support for the product, instead directing users to seek help from existing documentation and the community.{{Cite web |last=Chuang |first=Mark |date=11 November 2024 |title=VMware Fusion and Workstation are Now Free for All Users |url=https://blogs.vmware.com/cloud-foundation/2024/11/11/vmware-fusion-and-workstation-are-now-free-for-all-users/ |access-date=16 November 2024 |website=VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) Blog}}
