The Sm6 is a class of high-speed tilting electric multiple unit trainsets built by Alstom. A total of four trainsets were originally built for the now-defunct Allegro train service operated by Karelian Trains, a joint venture between Russian Railways (RZhD) and VR Group (Finnish Railways). VR has announced that they have seized full control of the trains and would begin using them in domestic services in 2025{{Cite web |last=Hanhinen |first=Hanna |last2=Kangas |first2=Laura |date=2023-12-14 |title=VR ottaa Allegro-junat kotimaan liikenteeseen |url=https://yle.fi/a/74-20064987 |access-date=2025-01-12 |website=Yle Uutiset |language=fi}}{{Cite web |date=2023-12-14 |title=Allegro trains to be deployed in VR's domestic long-distance traffic from 2025 |url=https://www.vrgroup.fi/en/vrgroup/news/allegro-trains-to-be-deployed-in-vr-s-domestic-long-distance-traffic-from-2025-141220230921/ |access-date=2024-04-29 |website=VR Group |language=en}} under the name Pendolino Plus.{{Cite web |date=2025-02-27 |title=Entiset Allegro-junat aloittavat liikennöinnin Helsingistä Turkuun ja Ouluun |url=https://yle.fi/a/74-20146369 |access-date=2025-02-27 |website=Yle Uutiset |language=fi}}
The Sm6 appears externally similar to VR's earlier Sm3 Pendolino series, but is based on the fourth generation 'Pendolino Nuovo' or 'New Pendolino' designs and its construction differed from the Sm3 in many ways.{{Cite web |date=7 October 2010 |title=Allegro high speed Pendolino train presented at Finland station in Saint Petersburg |url=http://www.alstom.com/WorkArea/DownloadAsset.aspx?id=8589940640 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110707120102/http://www.alstom.com/WorkArea/DownloadAsset.aspx?id=8589940640 |archive-date=7 July 2011 |access-date=12 February 2011 |publisher=Alstom}}{{cite journal |last1=Salo |first1=Sakari K |year=2011 |title=Helsingin–Pietarin liikenteen kehityksestä allegro |journal=Resiina |language=fi |publisher=Museorautatieyhdistys ry, Suomen Rautatiehistoriallinen Seura ry |pages=24–36 |issn=0356-0600 |number=1}} Each trainset consists of seven carriages each. The top speed of the train in passenger traffic is {{convert|220|km/h|abbr=on}}.
All four Sm6 trains were refurbished by VR FleetCare between 2018 and 2019.{{cite web |last=Paananen |first=Arja |date=19 April 2018 |title=Nahkapenkit, uudet värit, ravintolaan sohvaryhmiä: Allegro-junat mukavuusremonttiin – ensimmäinen valmistuu MM-kisaturisteille |url=https://www.is.fi/matkat/art-2000005647192.html |website=Ilta-Sanomat |language=fi}} The Sm6 fleet is primarily maintained at Ilmala depot north of Helsinki, although some maintenance mainly related to Russian technical systems was also performed in Saint Petersburg.{{Cn|date=January 2025}}
The Sm6 was equipped to operate on both the Finnish and the Russian railway networks. The units had dual-voltage electrical equipment able to use both the Finnish 25 kV 50 Hz alternating current and the Russian 3 kV direct current electrification systems. The wheelsets were built to run at over {{convert|200|km/h|abbr=on}} speeds on both the Finnish {{Track gauge|1524mm}} and the nominally slightly narrower Russian {{Track gauge|1520mm}} gauges, and the doors were equipped with a retractable step to make boarding from both Finnish {{convert|550|mm|1|abbr=on}} high and Russian {{convert|1100|mm|1|abbr=on}} high platforms easy. The units were equipped for both the Finnish and Russian railway technical systems, which differed substantially.{{Cite journal|title=2000-luvun tekniikalla kohti Pietaria |language=fi |trans-title=Towards St. Petersburg with 21st century technology |url=http://www.rautatietekniikka.fi/rautatietekniikka/Rautatietekniikka-2-2010.pdf |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110717030713/http://www.rautatietekniikka.fi/rautatietekniikka/Rautatietekniikka-2-2010.pdf |url-status=dead |archive-date=2011-07-17 |journal=Rautatietekniikka |publisher=Rautatiealan Teknisten Liitto RTL ry |issue=2 |year=2010 |volume=22 |pages=10–12 |issn=1237-1513 }}
