Val-de-Charmey

Cerniat is first mentioned in 1288 as Sernia.{{HDS|896|Cerniat}} Charmey is first mentioned in 1211 as Chalmeis. Until 1760 it was known as Feiguières. The municipality is also informally known by its German name Galmis.{{HDS|897|Charmey}}

After the 2014 merger Val-de-Charmey had an area of {{Swiss area|2163|mi=on|eid=Q2507678}}.{{Swiss area data|2163|QUELLE|eid=Q2507678}} Of this area, about 43.7% is used for agricultural purposes, while 41.9% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 2.1% is settled (buildings or roads) and 12.2% is unproductive land. In the 2013/18 survey a total of {{convert|133|ha|acre|abbr=on}} or about 1.2% of the total area was covered with buildings, an increase of {{convert|53|ha|acre|abbr=on}} over the 1980/81 amount. Over the same time period, the amount of recreational space in the municipality increased by {{convert|2|ha|acre|abbr=on}} and is now about 0.04% of the total area. Of the agricultural land, {{convert|3|ha|acre|abbr=on}} is used for orchards and vineyards, {{convert|648|ha|acre|abbr=on}} is fields and grasslands and {{convert|4644|ha|acre|abbr=on}} consists of alpine grazing areas. Since 1980/81 the amount of agricultural land has decreased by {{convert|286|ha|acre|abbr=on}}. Over the same time period the amount of forested land has increased by {{convert|308|ha|acre|abbr=on}}.

In the 2015 federal election the most popular party was the CVP with 31.1% of the vote. The next three most popular parties were the SVP (25.1%), the FDP (21.4%) and the SP (15.4%). In 2014 the crime rate, of the over 200 crimes listed in the Swiss Criminal Code (running from murder, robbery and assault to accepting bribes and election fraud), in Val-de-Charmey was 46.7 per thousand residents. This rate is about 72.3% of the average rate in the entire country. During the same period, the rate of drug crimes was 3.8 per thousand residents which is only 39.6% of the rate in the canton and 38.4% of the national rate.
