Variovorax is a Gram-negative and motile genus of bacteria from the family Comamonadaceae. It belongs to the class called Betaproteobacteria.{{cite journal|last1=Parker|first1=Charles Thomas|last2=Garrity|first2=George M|editor-first1=Charles Thomas |editor-first2=George M. |editor-last1=Parker |editor-last2=Garrity |title=Nomenclature Abstract for Variovorax.|journal=The NamesforLife Abstracts|date=1 January 2003|doi=10.1601/nm.1832|language=en}}{{cite book|last1=Willems|first1=Anne|last2=Mergaert|first2=Joris|last3=Swings|first3=Jean |title=Bergey's Manual of Systematics of Archaea and Bacteria |chapter=Variovorax |date=14 September 2015|pages=1–9|doi=10.1002/9781118960608.gbm00952|publisher=John Wiley & Sons, Ltd|isbn=9781118960608 |language=en}} It is an aerobic bacteria and most of its species is found in soil and freshwater.{{Cite journal |last1=Decewicz |first1=Przemyslaw |last2=Kitowicz |first2=Michal |last3=Radlinska |first3=Monika |date=2022-11-04 |title=Characteristics and Comparative Genomic Analysis of a Novel Virus, VarioGold, the First Bacteriophage of Variovorax |journal=International Journal of Molecular Sciences |volume=23 |issue=21 |pages=13539 |doi=10.3390/ijms232113539 |issn=1422-0067 |pmc=9658991 |pmid=36362326 |doi-access=free }} The demographic distribution of this species is primarily in Europe, Asia and the Americas, as well as the polar regions.{{Cite journal |last1=Satola |first1=Barbara |last2=Wübbeler |first2=Jan Hendrik |last3=Steinbüchel |first3=Alexander |date=2023-07-07 |title=Metabolic characteristics of the species Variovorax paradoxus |url=https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23192768/ |journal=Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology |volume=97 |issue=2 |pages=541–560 |doi=10.1007/s00253-012-4585-z |issn=1432-0614 |pmid=23192768 |s2cid=253775538 |access-date=2023-07-07}} Its designated species is Variovorax paradoxus which arose from the species Alcaligenes paradoxus being grouped under the Variovorax genus.{{Cite journal |last=(Davis et al. 1969) Willems et al. 1991. |editor-first1=Charles Thomas |editor-first2=George M. |editor-last1=Parker |editor-last2=Garrity |date=2022-08-18 |title=Name Abstract for Variovorax paradoxus |url=https://doi.org/10.1601/nm.1833 |journal= |language=en |doi=10.1601/nm.1833|url-access=subscription }} Variovorax paradoxus constitutes to the methylotrophic microbiota of the human mouth.{{Cite journal |last1=Anesti |first1=Vasiliki |last2=McDonald |first2=Ian R. |last3=Ramaswamy |first3=Meghna |last4=Wade |first4=William G. |last5=Kelly |first5=Donovan P. |last6=Wood |first6=Ann P. |title=Isolation and molecular detection of methylotrophic bacteria occurring in the human mouth |url=https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/16011760/ |journal=Environmental Microbiology |volume=7 |issue=8 |pages=1227–1238 |doi=10.1111/j.1462-2920.2005.00805.x |issn=1462-2912 |pmid=16011760|date=2022-08-18}}
