History
Vernier Software & Technology was founded in 1981 in Portland, Oregon, at the home of David Vernier, a high-school physics teacher, and Christine Vernier, a local business manager.[http://www.vernier.com/caliper/fall06/history.html The Caliper, Fall 2006] {{webarchive |url=https://web.archive.org/web/20100307031930/http://www.vernier.com/caliper/fall06/history.html |date=March 7, 2010}} David Vernier became acquainted with the use of computers and sensor technology, known as "probeware" or "Microcomputer Based Labs" (MBL), after attending a workshop at the Oregon Graduate Center. This workshop inspired him to found Vernier Software & Technology.{{Cite web |last=Tinker |first=Robert |title=A History of Probeware |url=http://www.concord.org/work/software/ccprobeware/probeware_history.pdf |archive-url=http://web.archive.org/web/20110725195016/http://www.concord.org/work/software/ccprobeware/probeware_history.pdf |archive-date=2011-07-25 |access-date=2025-03-09 |website=Concord Consortium}}
The first software programs developed by Vernier were scientific simulations for Apple II computers. He originally developed the programs for use in his physics classes, but later decided to sell them. His wife took out an advertisement in a newspaper and the programs became popular. Vernier Software & Technology was incorporated as a company in 1981, with David as CEO.{{Cite web |date=2024-05-24 |title=Profile: Perpetual Motion |url=https://oregonbusiness.com/profile-perpetual-motion/ |access-date=2025-03-12 |website=Oregon Business |language=en-US}} Christine originally handled the business aspect of the company. David took a leave of absence from teaching and began working at the company full time in 1984.
Gradually, the company began making software for other computers using the DOS operating system and for Macintosh computers. In the late 1980s, the company started producing assembled temperature sensors and many other types of sensors, such as photogates and motion detectors for studying moving objects.{{Cite journal |last=Robertson |first=Charles E. |date=1992-11-01 |title=From mousetraps to Macintoshes |url=https://pubs.aip.org/aapt/pte/article-abstract/30/8/484/270768/From-mousetraps-to-Macintoshes?redirectedFrom=fulltext |journal=The Physics Teacher |volume=30 |issue=8 |pages=484–486 |doi=10.1119/1.2343614 |issn=0031-921X|url-access=subscription }} Vernier collaborates with Texas Instruments to develop the Calculator-Based Laboratory (CBL).{{Cite book |last=DeBettencourt |first=Kathleen Bajorek |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=NNqs7Xrg1iQC&newbks=1&newbks_redir=0&lpg=PA33&dq=calculator%20based%20library%20vernier&pg=PA33#v=onepage&q=calculator%20based%20library%20vernier&f=false |title=Environmental Connections: A Guide to Environmental Studies |date=2000 |publisher=Kendall Hunt |isbn=978-0-7872-7105-3 |pages=33 |language=en}}
