It includes ten species native to Mexico.{{cite web |title=Vickianthus H.Rob. |url=https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:77334392-1 |website=Plants of the World Online |publisher=Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew |access-date=30 June 2025}}

The species now included in Vickianthus were formerly placed in the genera Vernonia and Vernonanthura. In 2023 Harold E. Robinson et al. organized them into a new genus based in a comprehensive phylogenetic study of the tribe Vernonieae. The genus is named after the botanist, curator, and plant collector Vicki Funk (1947–2019).Robinson†, H., Funk†, V. A., Kelloff, C. L., & Chan, R. (2023).
