Victor John Stenger ({{IPAc-en|ˈ|s|t|ɛ|ŋ|g|ər}}; January 29, 1935 – August 25, 2014) was an American particle physicist, philosopher, author, and religious skeptic.
Following a career as a research scientist in the field of particle physics, Stenger was associated with New Atheism and he authored popular science books.{{cite web | url=https://www.skeptic.com/insight/the-fifth-horseman-the-insights-of-victor-stenger-1935-2014/ | last1=Shermer |first1=Michael |title=The Fifth Horseman: The Insights of Victor Stenger (1935–2014) | publisher= Skeptic (American magazine)|date=2014-09-20|access-date=2024-06-08}} He published twelve books for general audiences on physics, quantum mechanics, cosmology, philosophy, religion, atheism, and pseudoscience, including the 2007 best-seller God: The Failed Hypothesis: How Science Shows That God Does Not Exist. His final book was God and the Multiverse: Humanity's Expanding View of the Cosmos (2014). He was a regular featured science columnist for the Huffington Post.[http://www.skepticality.com/les-folies-de-foi/ Audio of interview with Stenger on the podcast "Skepticality"] released 28 August 2012 by the Skeptics Society.

Victor J. Stenger was born on January 29, 1935, and raised in a working-class neighborhood of Bayonne, New Jersey. His father was a Lithuanian immigrant, and his mother was the daughter of Hungarian immigrants.{{cite web|url=http://www.colorado.edu/philosophy/vstenger/VWeb/Bio.html |title=A Biography of Victor J. Career
=Education and employment=
Stenger attended public schools in Bayonne, New Jersey, and received a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Newark College of Engineering (now the New Jersey Institute of Technology). He then moved to Los Angeles on a Hughes Aircraft Company fellowship, earning a Master of Science and PhD in physics from UCLA.{{cite web |url=http://www.centerforinquiry.net/oncampus/events/denver_victor_stenger_god_the_failed_hypothesis/ |title=[Denver] Victor Stenger: "God: The Failed Hypothesis" |publisher=Center for Inquiry |access-date=2009-12-21 |archive-date=2015-09-08 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150908123319/http://www.centerforinquiry.net/oncampus/events/denver_victor_stenger_god_the_failed_hypothesis/ |url-status=dead }}
He was a member of the Department of Physics at the University of Hawaii until his 2000 retirement. He held visiting positions on the faculties of the University of Heidelberg in Germany and Oxford University (twice) and was a visiting researcher at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory{{cite web|url=http://www.colorado.edu/philosophy/vstenger/Quantum/qmeta.html |title=Quantum Metaphysics |publisher=Colorado.edu |access-date=2009-12-21}} in England, the National Nuclear Physics Laboratory in Frascati, Italy, and the University of Florence in Italy.{{cite web|url=http://www.pointofinquiry.org/victor_stenger_god_the_failed_hypothesis |title=Victor Stenger - God: The Failed Hypothesis |publisher=Point of Inquiry |date=2007-03-02 |access-date=2009-12-21}} He served as an adjunct professor of philosophy at the University of Colorado at Boulder.{{cite web|url=http://origins.skeptic.com/speakers_Stenger.php |title=ORIGINS — the BIG Questions: 2008 Skeptics Society Conference: Dr. Victor Stenger |publisher=Origins.skeptic.com |access-date=2009-12-21}}
=Scientist=
Stenger's first peer-reviewed work was published in 1964, and his research career continued until his retirement in 2000. His research involved work that determined properties of gluons, quarks, strange particles, and neutrinos. Stenger focused on neutrino astronomy and very high-energy gamma rays.
=Philosopher and skeptic=
Stenger was an advocate of philosophical naturalism, skepticism, and atheism, and wrote several books and papers about the relationship between science and religion. He was a prominent critic of intelligent design and the aggressive use of the anthropic principle. He maintained that if consciousness and free will do exist, they will eventually be explained in a scientific manner that invokes neither the mystical nor the supernatural. He criticized those who invoke the perplexities of quantum mechanics in support of the paranormal, mysticism, or supernatural phenomena, writing several books and articles to debunk contemporary pseudoscience.{{cite web |url=http://www.csicop.org/author/victorstenger |title=Victor Stenger |publisher=The Committee for Skeptical Inquiry |access-date=2009-12-21 |archive-date=2014-04-11 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20140411005857/http://www.csicop.org/author/victorstenger |url-status=dead }}
Stenger took part in the 2008 "Origins Conference" hosted by the Skeptics Society at the California Institute of Technology and debated Hugh Ross on the topic of whether science supports belief in existence of God.{{Cite web | title=ORIGINS — The BIG Questions: 2008 Skeptics Society Conference | url=https://origins.skeptic.com/downloads/2008_Conference_Brochure.pdf | access-date=2024-12-15 | website=origins.skeptic.com}}
In 1992, Uri Geller sued Stenger and Prometheus Books for $4 million, claiming defamation for questioning his "psychic powers." The suit was dismissed and Geller was ordered to pay court costs.{{cite news | url=http://www.csicop.org/articles/uri_dis.html | title=Uri Geller Libel Suit Dismissed | publisher=Skeptical Inquirer | date=August 1994 | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20080211180550/http://csicop.org/articles/uri_dis.html | archive-date=2008-02-11 | url-status=dead }}
Astronomer Luke Barnes argued in a 2012 paper that many of Stenger's claims about fine-tuning were problematic and that his arguments were fallacious.{{cite journal|last1=Barnes|first1=Luke|title=The Fine-Tuning of the Universe for Intelligent Life|journal=Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia|date=June 2012|volume=29|issue=4|pages=529–564|doi=10.1071/AS12015|arxiv=1112.4647|bibcode=2012PASA...29..529B |s2cid=2951263 }} Stenger responded that Barnes misunderstood and misrepresented his positions.{{cite arXiv |last=Stenger |first=Victor J. |author-link=Victor J.
