Victor Waito Zue (born {{abbr|c.|circa}} 1944) is a Chinese American computer scientist and professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
From 1989 to 2001, he headed the Spoken Language Systems Group[http://www.sls.csail.mit.edu The homepage of the Spoken Language Systems Group in MIT] at the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science. The group pioneered the development of many systems enabling interactions between human and computers using spoken language. Then, he served a ten-year tenure as Director of the Lab for Computer Science (LCS), and the Co-Director and Director of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL). Since 2001, Victor has returned to teaching and research from the director position in 2011. He is also a distinguished research chair professor at NTU Taiwan.{{Cite web|url=https://www.csie.ntu.edu.tw/people/bio.php?PID=149|title = Victor Zue - NTU CSIE}}
Biography
Zue was born in Sichuan, China, and was raised in Taiwan and Hong Kong.{{citation needed|date=July 2017}} He came to the US at age 18 to study at the University of Florida. He graduated with his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering in 1968.{{cite web|title=Victor Zue|url=http://www.100.ece.ufl.edu/profiles/zue.php|website=Celebrating 100 Years of Electrical and Computer Engineering|publisher=University of Florida|accessdate=21 July 2017}} He received his Sc.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1976. In the early part of his career, Zue studied acoustics, phonetics, and phonological properties of
American English. His research interest shifted to the development of spoken language interfaces to make human-computer interactions easier and more natural. Between 1989 and 2001, he led the Spoken Language Systems Group at the MIT Laboratory for Computer Science.{{cite web|title=Distinguished Lecture Series - Professor Victor Zue|url=http://www.shiae.cuhk.edu.hk/seminar/Oct312008_ProfVictorZue_DL.pdf|website=Chinese University of Hong Kong|accessdate=21 July 2017|date=31 October 2008}} During this time, he helped lead development of the TIMIT Acoustic-Phonetic Continuous Speech Corpus.{{cite web|title=TIMIT Acoustic-Phonetic Continuous Speech Corpus - Linguistic Data Consortium|url=https://catalog.ldc.upenn.edu/LDC93S1|website=Linguistic Data Consortium|publisher=University of Pennsylvania|accessdate=21 July 2017|language=en}} Zue collaborates with and is married to fellow MIT researcher Stephanie Seneff.{{cite journal | doi=10.1016/0167-6393(90)90010-7 | title=Speech database development at MIT: Timit and beyond | year=1990 | last1=Zue | first1=Victor | last2=Seneff | first2=Stephanie | last3=Glass | first3=James | journal=Speech Communication | volume=9 | issue=4 | pages=351–356 }}{{cite news|title=Weddings and Engagements|url=http://www.capecodtimes.com/article/20061011/LIFE0901/310119952|accessdate=16 November 2017|agency=Cape Cod Times|date=11 October 2006|language=en}}
