Production

The design was built by Shipyard Karlskrona in Sweden from 1966 to 1971. It then had its rudder and keel modified and was built by Albin Marine from 1971 until 1977. A total of about 1,450 boats were built, but it is now out of production.{{cite web|url = https://sailboatdata.com/builder/albin-marine|title = Albin Marine 1899 - |access-date = 13 December 2020|last= McArthur| first = Bruce |work = sailboatdata.com|year = 2020|archive-url= https://archive.today/20201202001145/https://sailboatdata.com/builder/albin-marine|archive-date= 2 December 2020 |url-status= live}}{{cite web|url = https://www.boat-specs.com/sailing/builders/albin-marine|title = Albin Marine|access-date = 13 December 2020|work = Boat-Specs.com|year=2020|archive-url= https://archive.today/20201202005949/https://www.boat-specs.com/sailing/builders/albin-marine|archive-date= 2 December 2020 |url-status= live}}

Design

File:Viggen 23 sailboat showing transom.jpg

The Viggen 23 is a recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fibreglass, with wood trim. It has a masthead sloop rig with aluminum spars, a deck-stepped mast, wire standing rigging and a single set of unswept spreaders. The hull has a spooned raked stem, an angled transom, a skeg-mounted rudder controlled by a tiller and a fixed fin keel. It displaces {{convert|3086|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} and carries {{convert|1323|lb|kg|0|abbr=on}} of ballast.

The boat has a draft of {{convert|3.64|ft|m|abbr=on}} with the standard keel.

The design has sleeping accommodation for four people, with a double "V"-berth in the bow cabin and two straight settees in the main cabin. The galley is located on the port side at the companionway ladder. The galley is equipped with a two-burner stove. A navigation station is opposite the galley, hidden under the starboard side seat.{{Cite book |last=Brohäll |first=Per |title=Albin-Viggen Bordbok |publisher=Albin Marine |year=1974 |location=Kristinehamn (Sweden) |language=SV}} The head is located under the v-berth fill-in. The fresh water tank has a capacity of {{convert|11.9|u.s.gal}}.

For sailing the design may be equipped with a symmetrical spinnaker of {{convert|463|sqft|m2|abbr=on}}. It has a hull speed of {{convert|5.95|kn|km/h|abbr=on}}.

Operational history

The boat is supported by an active class club that organizes racing events, the Albin- och Karlskrona Viggenklubben (English: Albin- and Karlskrona Viggen Club).{{cite web|url= https://sailboatdata.com/association/viggen-23-swe|title= Viggen 23 (SWE)|access-date = 13 December 2020|last= McArthur| first = Bruce |work = sailboatdata.com|year = 2020|archive-url= https://archive.today/20201213133954/https://sailboatdata.com/association/viggen-23-swe|archive-date= 13 December 2020 |url-status= live}}
