History

Vilsteren is an esdorp which was first mentioned in 1233 as Hermanno de Vilsteren.{{cite web|url=https://etymologiebank.nl/trefwoord/vilsteren |title=Vilsteren - (geografische naam) |website=Etymologiebank |access-date=16 March 2022 |language=nl}}{{cite web|url=https://www.dbnl.org/tekst/sten009monu03_01/sten009monu03_01_0098.php |title=Vilsteren |author=Ronald Stenvert & Jan ten Hove |year=1998 |page=262 |publisher=Waanders |location=Zwolle |isbn=90 400 9200 1 |language=nl |access-date=15 March 2022}} In 1381, a manor house was established in the village. The current Huis Vilsteren dates from 1908. A clandestine church was built in the estate during the Reformation, and Vilsteren is one of the few villages to remain Roman Catholic in what is now the Protestant Bible Belt. The Saint Willibrord Church was completed in 1817. In 1840, it was home to 146 people.{{cite web|url=https://www.plaatsengids.nl/vilsteren |title=Vilsteren |website=Plaatsengids |access-date=16 March 2022 |language=nl}}
