Vineburg has a post office which was established in 1897.[http://www.zipinfo.com/cgi-local/zipsrch.exe?cnty=cnty&zip=95487&Go=Go ZIP Code Lookup]{{cite book|last=Durham|first=David L. |title=California's Geographic Names: A Gazetteer of Historic and Modern Names of the State|publisher=Quill Driver Books|year=1998|pages=719|isbn=1-884995-14-4|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=Yfa0hmE7yocC}}
Vineburg began in the late 1870s as a stop on the Sonoma Valley Railroad, which would later become a branch of the Northwestern Pacific Railroad. The town was originally a major shipping point for locally-raised apples, pears, and eggs.{{cite magazine |last=Holden |first=E. |date= March 1927 |title=Little Histories of the Road: Vineburg |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=fYE4AAAAIAAJ&dq=vineburg&pg=RA15-PA3 |magazine=Northwestern Pacific Headlight |location=San Francisco, CA |publisher= Northwestern Pacific Railroad Company|access-date=15 Dec 2023}} After the railroad was abandoned, the town began "gradually losing its identity" as distinct from nearby Sonoma, with its agricultural facilities giving way to light industry.{{cite news |last=McConahey |first=Meg |date=9 Mar 1987 |title=A little town that almost isn't |url=https://www.newspapers.com/image/265426313/?terms=vineburg&match=1 |work=The Press Democrat |location=Sonoma, CA |access-date=15 Dec 2023}}
