The Viva Brazil Movement (in Portuguese: "Movimento Viva Brasil") is a Brazilian non-profit association founded in 2004, with the objective of "defending the constitutional right of civilians to keep and bear arms destined for self-defense, shooting sports and arms collection".
Overview
The Viva Brasil Movement became famous in 2005 for its role in the "no" campaign in the referendum on the ban on the sale of firearms and ammunition.{{cite web |url=http://memoria.ebc.com.br/agenciabrasil/noticia/2005-09-08/comeca-hoje-campanha-sobre-referendo-do-desarmamento-no-radio-e-na-tv |title=Começa hoje campanha sobre referendo do desarmamento no rádio e na TV |publisher=Empresa Brasil de Comunicação S/A |date=8 September 2005 |author= |access-date=2021-05-17}}
With the victory of "no" in that referendum, the majority of the Brazilian electorate decided to continue the trade in firearms and ammunition.{{cite web |url=https://www.tse.jus.br/eleicoes/plebiscitos-e-referendos/referendo-2005 |title=Referendo de 2005 |publisher=Tribunal Superior Eleitoral |date=2005 |author= |access-date=2021-05-17}}{{cite web |url=http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4368598.stm |title=Brazilians reject gun sales ban |publisher=BBC News |date=24 October 2005 |author= |access-date=2021-05-17}} Since then, it has become one of the most important civil rights entities to defend the possession of small arms by citizens and sport shooters.{{cite web |url=http://memoria.ebc.com.br/agenciabrasil/noticia/2011-05-06/presidente-do-movimento-viva-brasil-estima-que-campanha-do-desarmamento-arrecadara-menos-armas |title=Presidente do Movimento Viva Brasil estima que campanha do desarmamento arrecadará menos armas |publisher=Empresa Brasil de Comunicação S/A |date=6 May 2011 |author= |access-date=2021-05-17}}
Actions
The Viva Brasil Movement strongly criticizes the excessive bureaucracy imposed on citizens who wish to acquire weapons legally. Its members claim that this bureaucracy stimulates the illegal market. They also argue that criminals do not acquire weapons through the legal market, even appealing to clandestine firearm factories to arm themselves. Together with other groups, such as the "Instituto Defesa" ("Defense Institute"),{{cite web |url=https://defesa.org/dwp/ |title=Instituto Defesa |publisher=defesa.org |date= |author= |access-date=2021-05-17}} he defends the repeal of the "Estatuto do Desarmamento" ("Disarmament Statute"), understanding that, by insisting on its maintenance, the government disrespects the decision taken by the majority of voters in 2005.{{cite web |url=https://www.camara.leg.br/radio/programas/445811-movimento-viva-brasil-apoia-revogacao-do-estatuto-do-desarmamento/ |title=Movimento Viva Brasil apoia revogação do Estatuto do Desarmamento |publisher=Câmara dos Deputados |date=2014 |author= |access-date=2021-05-17}}{{cite web |url=http://wn.com/Movimento_Viva_Brasil#/videos |title=Bene Barbosa, Movimento Viva Brasil, defende o fim do Estatuto do Desarmamento |publisher=wn.com |date=23 July 2014 |author= |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150306025655/http://wn.com/Movimento_Viva_Brasil#/videos |access-date=2021-05-17|archive-date=2015-03-06 }}
In April 2011, the Viva Brasil Movement, through its president, Bene Barbosa, made a presentation at the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil called "Control and inspection x Public Disarmament Policy", where he disputed data on the increase in rates of homicides are related to the sale of legal weapons to civilians. He also contested the claim that access to weapons by CACs (Collectors, Shooters and Hunters), is less enforced or that there is greater ease.{{cite web |url=https://www2.camara.leg.br/atividade-legislativa/comissoes/comissoes-permanentes/cspcco/apresentacoes-em-eventos/pasta-audiencias-2011/ApresentaoMovimentoVivaBrasil.pdf |title=Controle e fiscalização x Política Pública de Desarmamento |publisher=Chamber of Deputies of Brazil |date=22 December 2003 |author=Bene Barbosa |access-date=2021-05-24}}

Currently, in Brazil, the possession of firearms is only allowed for people over the age of 25, with a clean record in the police and that justifies their real need to have a firearm.{{cite web |url=https://www.armasdefogoparaguai.com/comprar-armas-de-fogo/ |title=Como comprar arma de fogo legalmente no Brasil |publisher=Casa do Tiro |date=26 March 2015 |author=Felipe Mesquita |access-date=2021-05-17}}
