Biography
Tabar took her medical degree from the American University of Beirut. It was followed by a neurosurgical residency at the University of Massachusetts. She did postdoctoral work at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.
Having done a research fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Tabar joined the faculty. At present, she is the Theresa C. Feng Chair for Neurosurgical Oncology and the Vice Chair for Neurosurgical Research and Education.{{cite web | author=The ASCO Post | title=Viviane Tabar, MD, Named Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center | website=The ASCO Post | date=10 Feb 2018 | url=http://www.ascopost.com/issues/february-10-2018/viviane-tabar-md-named-chair-of-the-department-of-neurosurgery-at-memorial-sloan-kettering-cancer-center/ | access-date=2 Aug 2018}} In December 2017, she was named Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, succeeding to Philip Gutin, MD.{{Cite web|url=https://amysmartgirls.com/congratulations-dr-fa2b1e009675|title=Congratulations Dr. Viviane Tabar — the New Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center|last=Mason|first=Heather|date=2018-01-11|website=Medium|language=en|access-date=2019-10-03}}{{Cite web|url=https://www.academic-med.com/news/2018/01/29/viviantabar-neurosurgerychair-memorialsloanketterring|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191030163131/https://www.academic-med.com/news/2018/01/29/viviantabar-neurosurgerychair-memorialsloanketterring|url-status=dead|archive-date=October 30, 2019|title=Academic Physician Recruitment & Executive Search {{!}} News {{!}} Dr. Vivian Tabar selected as Neurosurgery Chair at Memorial Sloan Kettering|website=www.academic-med.com|access-date=2019-10-03}}

Work
Tabar's specialty is intraoperative brain mapping techniques.
Her research is in stem cell biology, and she is one of the leaders of the New York State consortium for the development of human embryonic stem cell–derived dopamine neurons for Parkinson's disease.{{cite web |url=https://stemcell.ny.gov/developing-human-es-cell-derived-dopamine-neuron-source-cell-therapy |title=Developing a Human ES Cell Derived Dopamine Neuron Source for Cell Therapy in Parkinson's Disease |access-date=2 August 2018}} She has devised strategies for cell-based therapies for the repair of radiation-induced brain injury. Her lab has used pluripotent stem cells for brain tumor modeling, resulting in novel insights into the biology of gliomas and to the discovery of candidate therapeutic targets for brain tumors. She has a clinical expertise in the surgical management of brain tumors such as complex gliomas, meningiomas and skull base tumors.{{Cite web|url=https://gradschool.weill.cornell.edu/faculty/viviane-tabar|title=Viviane Tabar {{!}} Graduate School of Medical Sciences|website=gradschool.weill.cornell.edu|access-date=2019-10-03}} In 2010, with her research team of the Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, she demonstrated the fact that tumorous blood vessel cells may come from tumor cells as a way to create their own blood supply. Those results contributed to demonstrate the great plasticity of tumors.{{Cite web|url=https://www.science.org/content/article/brain-tumors-grow-their-own-blood-supply|title=Brain Tumors Grow Their Own Blood Supply|last1=Kaiser|first1=Jocelyn|date=2010-11-21|website=Science {{!}} AAAS|language=en|access-date=2019-10-03}}
