Reception
In a positive review from NME, Steven Wells described Vulcan as "Y2K Tourette’s Pop" and named it as the "Single of the Week", writing that "[I]t beats the living shit out every single other record released this week and then dances naked around a bonfire of their burning corpses daubed in satanic runes and gibbering like a traumatised gibbon."{{Cite web |last=NME |date=2005-09-12 |title=Snake River Conspiracy : Vulcan |url=https://www.nme.com/reviews/reviews-nme-4270-338709 |access-date=2022-12-14 |website=NME |language=en-GB}} In theVillage Voice, Chuck Eddy called it "a suburban s&m theme park set to wax, kinky in a really cute way" but noted "Nobody audibly utters 'vulcan" anywhere in the lyrics, but a different word keeps recurring."{{cite news |last=Eddy |first=Chuck |date=2000-05-09 |title=Singles Again |page=121 |url=https://www.proquest.com/docview/232263959/fulltextPDF/C48022D95B9148E2PQ/3 |work=Village Voice |location=New York |publisher=Village Voice Media Holdings LLC |access-date=2025-04-17 |via=ProQuest |id={{ProQuest|232263959}}}}
