Serine/threonine-protein kinase WNK2 is an enzyme that in humans is encoded by the WNK2 gene.{{cite journal |vauthors=Scanlan MJ, Chen YT, Williamson B, Gure AO, Stockert E, Gordan JD, Tureci O, Sahin U, Pfreundschuh M, Old LJ | title = Characterization of human colon cancer antigens recognized by autologous antibodies | journal = Int J Cancer | volume = 76 | issue = 5 | pages = 652–8 |date=Jun 1998 | pmid = 9610721 | doi =10.1002/(SICI)1097-0215(19980529)76:5<652::AID-IJC7>3.0.CO;2-P | doi-access = free }}{{cite journal |vauthors=Verissimo F, Jordan P | title = WNK kinases, a novel protein kinase subfamily in multi-cellular organisms | journal = Oncogene | volume = 20 | issue = 39 | pages = 5562–9 |date=Sep 2001 | pmid = 11571656 | doi = 10.1038/sj.onc.1204726 | doi-access = free }}{{cite web | title = Entrez Gene: WNK2 WNK lysine deficient protein kinase 2| url = https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez?Db=gene&Cmd=ShowDetailView&TermToSearch=65268}}
The protein encoded by this gene is a cytoplasmic serine-threonine kinase that contains cysteine in place of the lysine found at the conserved ATP-binding location in subdomain II of protein kinases. Since this protein does have kinase activity, it is possible that another lysine in the kinase subdomain I can substitute for the missing conserved lysine.
