History
In 1978, WSYY-FM was founded on 97.7 FM as WKTR, upgrading to its current facilities in 1984 on 94.9. Prior to their The Mountain 94.9 branding, WSYY-FM used to be referred to as North Country 95, airing country music full-time.{{cite web|title=The Most Recent Internet Archive of The Former Website of WSYY-FM |url=http://www.angelfire.com/me3/nc95/ |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20050311082454/http://www.angelfire.com/me3/nc95/ |archivedate=March 11, 2005 }}{{cite web|title=The Most Recent Internet Archive of The "About Us" Page Within The Former Website of WSYY-FM |url=http://www.angelfire.com/me3/nc95/aboutnc95.html |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20040328155716/http://www.angelfire.com/me3/nc95/aboutnc95.html |archivedate=March 28, 2004 }} The current format, branding, and slogan was probably adopted around March 1, 2004, when Katahdin Communications, Inc. assumed control of WSYY-FM & AM from Katahdin Timberlands, LLC as a result of the radio station facing increasing land disputes, initially as a short term lease agreement, but the transfer of ownership became permanent.{{cite web|title="WSYY Radio Threatened With Trespass" By Ken Anderson Mar 9, 2004|url=http://www.magic-city-news.com/Local_17/WSYY_Radio_Threatened_With_Trespass_1111.shtml|website=Magic-City-News.com |access-date=April 7, 2022 |url-status=dead |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180819082747/http://www.magic-city-news.com/Local_17/WSYY_Radio_Threatened_With_Trespass_1111.shtml |archive-date=August 19, 2018 }} Those land disputes would lead to a loss of WSYY-FM's 23,500-watt transmitter location (featuring an antenna HAAT of 211 meters). WSYY-FM may have been operating under a Special Temporary Authority License (a 12,000-watt facility with an antenna HAAT of 68 meters via Hammond Ridge on Lake Road), ever since as long ago as late 2007, pending a planned permanent move to a 22,000-watt facility with an antenna HAAT of 198.4 meters (from just off Nicatou Road in Medway, well east of WSYY-FM's old or current transmitter tower location).{{cite web|title="Radio Station Considering Move To Medway" By Nick Sambides, Jr., BDN Staff Nov. 01, 2007|url=http://archive.bangordailynews.com/2007/11/01/radio-station-considering-move-to-medway/|website=Archive.BangorDailyNews.com}}{{cite web|title=Bangor Daily News - Google News Archive Search|url=https://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=2457&dat=20071101&id=QqZJAAAAIBAJ&sjid=pQ0NAAAAIBAJ&pg=1363,57882&hl=en|website=News.Google.com}}{{cite web|title= Statistics And Contour Map Regarding WSYY-FM's Special Temporary Authority License (FCCdata.org - powered by REC)|url=https://fccdata.org/?facid=33470&appid=1217311&i=2|website=FCCdata.org}}{{cite web|title=Details From WSYY-FM's Earliest "Granted" Application With The FCC Regarding WSYY-FM's Special Temporary Authority License|url=https://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/cdbsmenu.hts?context=25&appn=101217311&formid=911&fac_num=33470|website=Licensing.FCC.Gov}}{{cite web|title=Basic Info About WSYY-FM's Earliest "Granted" Application With The FCC Regarding WSYY-FM's Special Temporary Authority License|url=http://licensing.fcc.gov/cgi-bin/ws.exe/prod/cdbs/pubacc/prod/app_det.pl?Application_id=1217311|website=Licensing.FCC.Gov}}{{cite web|title=An FCC-Issued Letter To WSYY-FM Regarding An Extension Request (Filed On October 5th, 2011) For Their Special Temporary Authority License|url=https://cdbs.recnet.com/corres/?doc=29739|website=Licensing.FCC.Gov}}{{cite web|title=NERW 8/12/2013|url=http://www.fybush.com/nerw-8122013-fms-transition-in-philly-nyc/|website=Fybush.com|date=12 August 2013}} On November 23, 2016, the construction permit for this proposed move was modified to a 45,000-watt facility with an antenna HAAT of 146.7 meters, the first time this proposed move has ever received official approval from the FCC.[https://radio-locator.com/info/WSYY-FM Radio-Locator information on WSYY][https://transition.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/fmq?call=WSYY fcc.gov]
