WWF is a modification of the open standard PDF format for document exchange endorsed by the World Wide Fund for Nature (also abbreviated WWF) Germany.{{Cite web |title=WWF Germany's 'saveaswwf' PDF anti-printing campaign exposes internal rifts |publisher=printweek.com |url=http://www.printweek.com/news/1047152/WWF-Germanys-saveaswwf-PDF-anti-printing-campaign-exposes-internal-rifts/ |accessdate=21 December 2010 |url-status=dead |archiveurl=https://web.archive.org/web/20101219032750/http://www.printweek.com/news/1047152/WWF-Germanys-saveaswwf-PDF-anti-printing-campaign-exposes-internal-rifts/ |archivedate=19 December 2010 |df=dmy-all }} The WWF format is promoted as being more environmentally friendly than other comparable document exchange formats (e.g. PDF or DOC) since documents in this format are designed to be more difficult to print. The motivation behind the use of the format is to prevent unnecessary printing of documents. The website claims that the file format will be able to be read by most programs that can open ordinary PDF files.{{Cite web

Technical details
WWF files are simply PDF files with the security settings for printing set to "not allowed",{{Cite web | title = World Wildlife Fund WWF format cracked! | publisher = Hans Bezemer | date = 4 December 2010 | url = http://thebeezspeaks.blogspot.com/2010/12/world-wildlife-fund-wwf-format-cracked.html | format = | accessdate = 21 December 2010}} and the file extension ".wwf".
Thus, the inability to print the files comes from the DRM built into Adobe Reader, which looks at a flag in the PDF to see whether printing is allowed.{{Cite web | title = Create Adobe PDF Online: Security Settings Help | publisher = Adobe Systems | url = http://createpdf.adobe.com/cgi-feeder.pl/help_security?BP=&LOC=en_US | accessdate = 21 December 2010 | archive-url = https://web.archive.org/web/20091223033059/http://createpdf.adobe.com/cgi-feeder.pl/help_security?BP=&LOC=en_US | archive-date = 23 December 2009 | url-status = dead | df = dmy-all }} Other PDF readers, such as Ghostscript, may not honour the no-print flag, rendering WWF files printable.
Criticism
The initiative has been criticised{{Cite web | title = Email sent by a member of the FOSS community to the WWF | author = tracyanne | date = | url = http://lxer.com/module/forums/t/31330/ | format = | accessdate = 21 December 2010}}{{Cite web | title = Letter sent by the April organization to the WWF | author = April | date = | url = http://www.april.org/sites/default/files/20101208_courrier_wwf.pdf | format = | accessdate = 5 January 2011}} for restricting users rights, being ineffective (as non-Adobe readers such as Ghostscript can print documents in the format), for violating the BSD license,{{Cite web | title = Sourceforge Skim forum | publisher = Christiaan Hofman | date = 13 December 2010 | url = http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=26744588 | format = | accessdate = 16 January 2011}} for being incompatible with the goals of the free and open source software movement and for the software contacting the WWF without the user's consent.{{Cite web | title = Facebook entry | publisher = Save as WWF | date = 7 December 2010 | url = http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=27821&id=158395667536747&ref=mf | format = | accessdate = 4 January 2011}} It was criticised by WWF International director of corporate relations Maria Boulos for being "misleading" and having been launched as "a global product" despite being created by the WWF's German division without consultation with WWF International.
