Walter Erskine, Earl of Mar and Kellie (1865–1955)

Walter John Francis Erskine, 12th Earl of Mar and 14th Earl of Kellie {{post-nominals|country=GBR|KT|JP}} (29 August 1865 – 3 June 1955) was a Scottish nobleman.
Biography
The eldest son of Walter Erskine, 11th Earl of Mar and Mary Anne Forbes, he was educated at Eton and served as a 2nd lieutenant and then lieutenant in the Scots Guards from 1887–92.{{London Gazette| issue=26217|page=5585|date=27 October 1891}}{{London Gazette|issue=26331|page=5559|date=4 October 1892}}
He succeeded his father in 1888, and in 1892 married Lady Violet Ashley-Cooper, daughter of Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 8th Earl of Shaftesbury. They had three children:
- Elyne Violet Erskine (born-died 2 August 1893)
- Major John Francis Ashley Erskine, Lord Erskine (26 April 1895 – 3 May 1953)
- Captain Hon. Francis Walter Erskine (9 January 1899 – 1972)
He was a Scottish Representative Peer from 1892–1950, and held office as Lord Lieutenant of Clackmannanshire from 1898{{London Gazette|issue=11032|page=1013|date=18 October 1898|city=e}} and Lord Clerk Register and Keeper of the Signet from 1936–44.{{London Gazette|issue=34239|page=51|date=3 January 1936}}{{London Gazette|issue=16105|page=73|date=7 March 1944|city=e}} He was also Hereditary Keeper of Stirling Castle,{{London Gazette|issue=32807|page=2164|date=20 March 1923}} and Honorary Colonel of the 7th Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.{{London Gazette|issue=28181|page=7033|date=29 September 1908}}{{London Gazette|issue=33858|page=5498|date=26 August 1932}} He was successively Brigadier, Ensign, Lieutenant, and Captain in the Royal Company of Archers{{London Gazette|issue=12157|page=725|date=6 July 1909|city=e}}{{London Gazette|issue=13462|page=2140|date=13 June 1919|city=e}}{{London Gazette|issue=13822|page=1019|date=13 June 1922|city=e}}{{London Gazette|issue=15076|page=497|date=8 June 1934|city=e}}{{London Gazette|issue=16534|page=177|date=16 April 1948|city=e}}
He was appointed a Knight of the Thistle in the 1911 Coronation Honours{{London Gazette|issue=12366|page=625|date=23 June 1911|city=e}} and was Chancellor of the Order from 1932–49.{{London Gazette|issue=33894|page=8132|date=20 December 1932}}{{London Gazette|issue=38746|page=5129|date=28 October 1949}}Burke's Peerage 106th edition (1999) page 1860. His son, John, having predeceased him, he was succeeded by his grandson, John Erskine, Earl of Mar and Kellie (1921-1993).
